Hall of Athletic Honor

The inaugural class of the Hall of Athletic Honor.

The Hall of Athletic Honor recognizes exceptional athletic achievement by Gettysburg athletes over the past 100-plus years. Its members range from Albert Russell Aukerman, Class of 1897, a football running back and track star, to Jason (Jake) Dell, Class of 1998, a three-time All-American wrestler who was inducted in 2008. Since its founding in 1978, 199 student-athletes, coaches, administrators, and other personnel have been selected to the Hall of Athletic Honor.

Gettysburg College wrapped up an exciting and successful Homecoming weekend by honoring five individuals and two teams at the Hall of Athletic Honor induction ceremony inside the College Union Building on Saturday, Oct. 17.

Poor weather could do nothing to deter an eventful weekend at Gettysburg as over 1,000 alumni descended on the town to take part in various activities around the campus. All of the Bullets’ fall varsity athletic teams were in play and all recorded positive results.

On Friday, the field hockey team and the men’s soccer team wrapped up victories over Washington (Md.) College, the former winning 1-0 and the latter procuring a 2-0 decision. The good times continued on Saturday as both the women’s soccer squad and volleyball team downed Washington 2-1 and 3-0, respectively. Gettysburg’s cross country teams also turned in impressive showings as the men placed third among 25 teams and the women placed fourth out of 28 teams at the Gettysburg Invitational.

On the gridiron, Gettysburg’s offense rolled up a 59-14 victory over Juniata College, shattering Centennial Conference and school records for rushing yards with 525. The five Hall of Athletic Honor inductees – Braden Edwards ’90, Bill Gray ’96, Paul Hetrick ’74, Amy Washburn Bunting’94, and Kari Williams ’83 – were recognized at halftime of the game.

Later Saturday evening, the doors to the ballroom in the CUB were opened for the 31st Hall of Athletic Honor induction ceremony. The inductees and their families were joined by alums, current students, and staff at the opening reception and dinner.

Following the meal prepared and served by Dining Services, each inductee’s exploits were laid out for those in attendance. Sports Information Director Braden Snyder read a script detailing each person’s tenure in orange and blue, while a slide show of images was projected on a large screen in front of the audience.

Braden Edwards was the first in line and his impressive resume included two All-America citations in lacrosse, including first-team honors in 1990. He led the Bullets to the 1989 Middle Atlantic Conference championship and the team’s first appearance in the NCAA Division III Tournament. Like so many successful athletes, Edwards was humble in his acceptance speech, citing the play of his teammates and the influence of Head Coach Hank Janczyk as reasons for his success.

Bill Gray’s list of accomplishments was lengthy and impressive. He was a three-time All-American in three different sports, earning the accolades in cross country, indoor track & field, and outdoor track & field. Gray was also a multiple all-conference and all-region selection and set several school records. Similar to his racing days, his speech was quick, citing his former coaches Bob Condon and Aubrey Shenk among others.

Two-time MAC University champion wrestler Paul Hetrick was next up in the presentation. He won a pair of conference titles at 118 pounds when Gettysburg was still competing at the Division I level in the early 1970s and he finished with 64 career victories. A model student-athlete, Hetrick’s exploits also included a handful of academic awards that mirrored his efforts on the mat. When he took the podium, Hetrick detailed the story of his first collegiate wrestling match and playing for former coach Jim Sauve, in addition to recognizing the support of his family and friends throughout the years.

Amy Washburn Bunting’s list of records on the field hockey field was lengthy. From 1990 to 1993, Washburn re-wrote Gettysburg’s record book, smashing marks for goals in a game, goals in a season, points in a season, goals in a career, and points in a career. She was tabbed first-team all-conference, first-team all-region, and first-team All-America as a senior. Bunting gave thanks to her husband and his fraternity brothers for making all those early Saturday morning field hockey matches and she gave special notice to each of her field hockey coaches, Lois Bowers and Carol Daly Cantele.

Kari Williams was the final inductee to be presented. She was a standout for the Bullets’ basketball team for four seasons, averaging better than eight points and six rebounds per game and leading the team to a school-record 15 wins in 1982-83. Williams also played a major role in the women’s lacrosse team’s success in the early 80s, including garnering All-Championship Team honors after leading the squad to a fifth-place showing in the 1981 Association for Intercollegiate Athletics for Women Tournament. Williams thanked Bowers and former basketball coach Kay Higgins for guiding her along the way, and she gave special notice to her group of friends and family at her table, in particular former teammate and classmate Carol Daly Cantele.

Two teams were also honored at the event for their contributions to the athletic program. The 1983-84 women’s basketball team was recognized for its amazing season when it went 22-4, won the MAC Southern Division, and advanced to the NCAA Division III Tournament. The 1983-84 women’s track & field team was singled out as the first varsity team in a program that has been a perennial challenger on the conference and national levels.

To conclude the induction ceremony, Michael Birkner ’72 gave closing remarks on his interpretation of athletics at Gettysburg, paying special tribute to the legendary Hen Bream and his affect on so many countless individuals. Birkner is the author of the recently-published book “Building Men: Hen Bream and Gettysburg College Athletics”.
