2010 All-CC Baseball Team
LANCASTER, Pa. – A trio of Gettysburg College baseball players were named to the All-Centennial Conference team, it was announced Wednesday.
Senior third baseman
Mike Backus earned a spot on the first team while senior centerfielder
Kevin Langhauser captured second-team recognition. Junior pitcher/first baseman
Matt Karis was an honorable mention selection.
The All-Centennial Team is voted on by the conference's 10 head coaches.
Backus was honored with his second All-Centennial Conference award, as he was also named to the first team in 2008. As the team's No. 3 hitter, Backus has put together another outstanding season, leading the team in batting (.378), slugging (.681), hits (51, tied), RBIs (37), runs (33), doubles (nine), and home runs (eight). As of the latest Centennial Conference statistical report, Backus was tied for third in triples (four), tied for fifth in home runs, tied for sixth in RBIs, seventh in total bases (92), tied for seventh in hits, and eighth in slugging.
In Centennial Conference games, Backus was even better. He finished sixth in batting (.443), third in total bases (57), tied for third in doubles (seven), fourth in slugging (.814), fifth in hits (31), and tied for fifth in homers (five).
Heading into the team's final game of the year on Wednesday, Backus, a career .346 hitter, had owned several career school records, including doubles (42), home runs (17), and RBIs (128). He has also set single-season Gettysburg records this year for home runs (eight) and total bases (92). With 179 career hits (fourth in school history) and 114 career runs (second in school history), he is one of only three Gettysburg players with over 100 hits, runs, and RBIs.
Langhauser also came away with his second all-conference honor, as he was also selected to the second team in 2008. Gettysburg's leadoff hitter, he leads the Bullets in triples (seven), is tied for first in stolen bases (seven), and ranks second in batting (.338), slugging (.576), hits (51, tied), runs (32), RBIs (27), and home runs (six). Among the Centennial Conference leaders, he was first in triples, tied for seventh in hits, eighth in total bases (87), and tied for ninth in home runs.
A career .343 hitter, Langhauser shares the Bullets career record for triples (18). He has piled up 141 hits – ninth all-time at Gettysburg – and is fifth in steals (36), tied for fifth in home runs (nine), and eighth in total bases (219).
Karis was named All-Centennial Conference for the first time after a fine season both on the mound at the plate. The workhorse of the staff, Karis leads the team in appearances (11), starts (10), complete games (four), innings pitched (70 2/3), and strikeouts (50). He has put together a 4-4 record to go with a 5.22 ERA, and he tossed his first career shutout when he fired a six-inning two-hitter against Centennial Conference foe McDaniel College. Karis recorded his 100th career strikeout as well this season, becoming the first Bullet in four years to reach the milestone.
Among the Centennial Conference leaders, Karis is first in innings, tied for first in starts, and second in strikeouts.
At the plate, Karis is hitting .295 to go with seven doubles and four home runs. He has also posted 18 runs and 24 RBIs.
Gettysburg (15-20, 6-12 CC) concludes its season on Wednesday with a non-conference game at Susquehanna University.
