GETTYSBURG, Pa. – The Gettysburg College wrestling team won its home debut with some dominant displays on the mat in a 36-12 victory over the University of Scranton inside Bream Gym Wednesday night.

Gettysburg (1-0) posted five pins and a pair of decisions en route to the victory. The Bullets started out strong as senior Abe Evans took care of business quickly, taking Kyle McCall down just seconds into the match and ending it in less than two minutes with a pin.

Sophomore Matt Spano went to round two before pulling out another fall to put the hosts up 12-0. After picking up his third takedown, Spano put James Kelly's back to the mat at 4:18.

After a forfeit at 141 gave Scranton (0-1) its first points of the night, the Royals evened the bout with decisions at 149 and 157. Ryan Giovanetti scored four takedowns to beat freshman Pat Thomas 10-4 and Shawne Flesche edged freshman Max Sataloff 5-2.

Freshman Zach Thomson put the Bullets back on track and improved to 5-0 on the year with a two-minute pin of Paul Rajan at 165.

Sophomores Jared Leon and Mike Sheehan pulled off a pair of close decisions at 174 and 184, respectively. Leon scored an early takedown and held Chris Silakoski off the board in a 4-0 win, while Sheehan erased a 4-2 second-period deficit with a reversal and added an escape and two takedowns in the final period to win 10-6.

Sophomore Anton Serhan clinched the victory for Gettysburg by pinning Stephen Kaiser in just over two minutes. Junior Kevin Poplaski put a stamp on the victory by rushing out to an 11-0 lead before putting Luke Genovese on his back at 4:42.

Gettysburg returns to action this Saturday, Nov. 12, at the Ursinus College Fall Brawl. Opening bouts are scheduled to start at 9 a.m.
