Bullets Take All-America Honors Again, Finish 14th at NCAAs

400-Freestyle Relay Takes Seventh as Gettysburg Earns Three All-America Awards

Matt Libby anchored the 400-freestyle relay to a seventh-place finish to earn his third All-America title.
INDIANAPOLIS – The Gettysburg College men's swimming team put the finishes touches on an incredible season Saturday night on the fourth and final day of the NCAA Division III Swimming & Diving Championships at the IU Natatorium on the campus of IUPUI.

The Bullets 400-freestyle relay team placed seventh to become Gettysburg's third relay to earn All-America recognition. The squad earned 24 points as the Bullets finished the meet with 60 points, good for a 14th-place finish among 52 scoring teams. Denison University won the men's title with 600 points.

In Saturday night's championship final, freshman Jason Potter, freshman Mike Harmon, freshman Ashton Leyens and senior Matt Libby clocked a time of 3:01.55 in the 400-freestyle relay. They reset the school and Centennial Conference records that were set in the morning's preliminary session (3:02.04) in which the Bullets finished eighth. Freshman Stu Cubbison swam in place of Harmon in the prelims.

Kenyon won the event with a NCAA Division III record time of 2:55.56 and was followed by Denison, Johns Hopkins, Emory, Redlands, MIT, Gettysburg, and Wisconsin-Stevens Point.

Each of Gettysburg's 100-yard splits were progressively faster. Potter led off in 46.18 before Harmon followed in 45.55. Leyens touched in 45.26, and Libby closed in 44.56.

The Bullets competed in all five relays at the meet but were particularly impressive in the freestyles, earning All-America recognition and lowering their own school and Centennial Conference records in all three. The 200-free team finished seventh on Thursday while the 800-free squad took 11th on Friday.

Libby and Potter finished the championship with three All-America certificates apiece while Harmon and Leyens each earned two.

Also in Saturday morning's preliminaries, Harmon placed 19th in the 200-backstroke in 1:50.77 while Libby took 25th in the 100-freestyle in 45.71.

Gettysburg went undefeated during its dual meet season, finishing 8-0 and 6-0 in the Centennial Conference. The Bullets went on to host the Centennial Conference Championships and won the meet by 222 points for their second straight conference title.
