Student-athletes earn top awards at graduation

Brenden Repack and Adrienne Rahs took home the Beachem and Noerr Awards, respectively, on graduation weekend.
GETTYSBURG, Pa. – A number of student-athletes received top academic awards at the Spring Honors Day as part of Gettysburg College's 177th Commencement Exercises.

Adrienne Rahs was given the Clair B., Mary E., and Constance (Noerr) Baker Memorial Award which is given to the female senior on the basis of proficiency in athletics, scholarship, and character. The Noerr Award was established by Constance (Noerr) Baker '58 in memory of her mother and father. Rahs graduated with a perfect 4.0 GPA in mathematics and was also tabbed Phi Betta Kappa and Omicron Delta Kappa this year. She was a four-year starter and four-time All-Centennial Conference performer on the softball team.

Brenden Repack received the Charles W. Beachem Athletic Award, named in memory of Charles W. Beachem '25, the school's first alumni secretary. Similar to the Noerr Award, the Beachem Award is given to the male senior on the basis of character, scholarship, and athletic achievement. A team captain on the cross country team this past fall, Repack was Gettysburg's top finisher in each of the last 15 races of his career. The economics major also competed for three seasons on the Bullets track and field team.

Field hockey captain Martha Tahsler was given the Robert E. Curtis Award. The award was established by Margaret Curtis '52, George White, and the members of the Education Department in honor of Robert E. Curtis, who served as a faculty member in the Department of Education from 1987 to 2000. The honor is presented to two qualified, worthy, and promising students, one in elementary and one in secondary education, who have distinguished themselves in student teaching. Tahsler was a three-year starter on the field hockey team and was named all-conference this past fall.

A co-captain alongside Repack on the cross country team, Jim Myers, was recognized for outstanding work in the economics department with the Dwight D. Eisenhower Society/R.M. Hoffman Family Memorial Prize. The award was created by the R.M. Hoffman Family Trust through the Dwight D. Eisenhower Society in memory of Gettysburg businessman R.M. Hoffman. Myers was a three-year letterwinner with the cross country team.

Dennis Bazow earned the Dr. George R. Miller '19 and Dr. Richard T. Mara '46 Senior Prize in Physics. The honor was created by alumni and friends in memory of George R. Miller '19 and Richard T. Mara '48 to recognize a senior for sustained outstanding performance in physics. Bazow was a four-year letterwinner at tight end for Gettysburg's football team.
