Bullets Pick Up Two Centennial Victories

Gettysburg defeats Ursinus and Muhlenberg

WESTMINSTER, Md. – The Gettysburg College wrestling team wrapped up its Centennial Conference dual schedule with a pair of victories over Ursinus College and Muhlenberg College inside the Gill Center at McDaniel College Saturday afternoon.

Gettysburg (10-5, 5-2 CC) defeated Ursinus (6-6, 1-6 CC) 24-14, marking the Bullets' first victory over the Bears in 18 years. The Orange and Blue followed up with a 26-16 win over Muhlenberg (7-8, 2-5 CC) before coming up short against United States Merchant Marine Academy (8-7, 4-3 CC) 20-19 due to the tiebreaker criteria.

Gettysburg clinched its best record in conference competition since 1999-00 (5-1) and it recorded its first back-to-back 10-win campaigns in 22 years.

The Bullets erased an early deficit against Ursinus by winning three consecutive bouts. Senior Louie Carusillo (Pequannock, N.J./DePaul Catholic) scored a 7-5 win at 133 and freshman Sean Thompson (Plainsboro, N.J./West Windsor-Plainsboro South) tallied a late escape to clinch a 5-4 win at 141. Sophomore Colin Devlin (Dresher, Pa./Upper Dublin) posted a takedown and back points to edge Donte McCarthy 9-6 at 149.

The Bears jumped back in front with a pin at 157, but Gettysburg closed strong with four wins in the final five match ups. Junior Colin Kowalski (Derwood, Md./Georgetown Prep) recorded his team-best sixth technical fall (18-2) at 165 before sophomore Austin Roskos (Lawrenceville, N.J./Hopewell Valley Central) and senior Anthony Puca (Huntington, N.Y./Huntington) posted close decisions at 174 (6-5) and 197 (4-2, TB-1). Junior Paul Triandafilou (Derwood, Md./Georgetown Prep) closed the win with a 12-0 major decision at heavyweight.

Gettysburg never trailed against Muhlenberg as senior Lenny Ogozalek (Summit Hill, Pa./Panther Valley) logged a first-period pin at 125 pounds. After a setback at 133, Thompson earned an injury default win and Devlin tacked on a 10-1 major decision.

Kowalski needed overtime to get by Dylan Schwartz 3-1 at 165. Roskos racked up six takedowns on the way to a 13-4 major decision at 174. Triandafilou posted the team's final win 5-1.

The Orange and Blue saw its five-match winning streak come to a halt with a loss to Merchant Marine. The Mariners won the final four bouts to tie the team score 19-19 and clinched the dual win thanks to six victories in the match overall.

Ogozalek posted another first-period pin at 125 pounds, giving the senior 16 for the season and leaving him one short of the program's single-season mark set by Jake Dell '98 in 1997-98. Ogozalek also moved into a tie with Matt Shank '08 for second on the career list with 34 falls. The senior improved to 26-12 with his performance.

Thompson finished off a perfect day and improved to 26-9 with an 8-1 win over Daniel May at 141 pounds. Devlin and Kowalski also completed hat tricks, the former winning by major decision (10-1) at 149 and the latter claiming a victory by injury default at 165. Devlin improved to 17-7, while Kowalski secured his first career 30-win season (30-4).

Gettysburg also sent a contingent of competitors to the Messiah College Open. Freshman Alex Shaffer (Doylestown, Pa./Archbishop Wood) earned three wins by decision, major decision, and fall in the 133 bracket. Sophomore Traken Sutton (Wethersfield, Conn./Loomis Chaffee) scored a pair of 7-1 decisions at 149 pounds.

The Bullets return to action at the Centennial Conference Championship hosted by Washington and Lee University on Saturday, Feb. 10. Opening matches are set for 10 a.m.
