Rarely defeated during his stellar collegiate wrestling career, Hershberger was an integral part of the Bullets' mat dynasty in the late 1940's and early 1950's. A two-sport standout, he won a pair of Middle Atlantic Conference (MAC) championships in the 167-pound weight class and helped Gettysburg capture three of its seven consecutive MAC titles during that era. He also lettered twice as a member of Hen Bream's final football squads in 1950 and 1951.

It was on the mat where Hershberger earned his status as one of the College's most dependable athletes. After winning all four of his bouts on the 1949-50 freshman squad, he went undefeated through his first 10 varsity matches in 1950-51 before falling in the MAC championship bout as the Bullets earned a share of their third straight title.

Over his final two years, Hershberger lost exactly one more time. As a junior co-captain in 1951-52, he swept through six regular-season bouts before going 3-0 at the MAC tournament to become the 167-pound champion. He successfully defended that crown during his senior campaign, avenging his only loss that year in the MAC title bout. As a team, Gettysburg added its fifth straight championship and Hershberger earned a share of the 1953 Charles Beachem Award as the College's top senior male athlete.

A native of Bedford, Pa., he graduated from Gettysburg in 1953 with a degree in economics.
