He was a unique individual who entered Gettysburg in 1893 at the age of 20. Because of his maturity, he was elected captain of the football team. He emerged as one of the premier rushers of his day. Over a three-year period, he produced the winning points in wins over Dickinson, Washington and Jefferson and Franklin and Marshal.

He was an accomplished track athlete, running the 100 and 200 and also the long jumped.

He left school to become a physical instructor at the Latrobe, Pa. YMCA. Here he formed what became one of the first professional football teams and is credited with scoring the first professional touchdown in a game against Jeannette, Pa.
