He is considered one of the smartest punt and kickoff return men to attend Gettysburg. In his very first collegiate football game, he set up a Gettysburg score on a 54-yard punt return against Hofstra. Before he graduated, he had established three school records - 72 career punt returns; 1,044 career return yards; and 394 return yards a season.
During his grid career, he returned five punts for touchdowns, two in a 16-14 win over Temple; returned 43 kickoffs for 854 yards and intercepted 14 passes for 159 yards and one TD. He received the New York Alumni Club's Award for his performance against Hofstra. As a junior, he was named first team All-State, Lutheran All-America and All-Middle Atlantic Conference.
An outstanding leadoff batter in baseball, he hit a career .338 and fielded .915. He was the team's leading hitter his junior season and the number two hitter as a sophomore.
