He was small in stature, but explosive and quick in both football and baseball. He was one of the top freshmen recruits in 1941, but his career was interrupted by military service during World War II.

He was discharged in 1946 and resumed his baseball career that spring. As a second baseman, he drilled four home runs, ten doubles and stole nine bases. He continued to bombard opposing pitchers the next two years and never hit less than seven doubles in a season. Not only was he known for his blistering extra base hits, but his quickness on the base paths placed Gettysburg in many favorable situations.

In the fall of 1946 he was an outstanding running back in football. He led the team with 47 points on six touchdowns and 11 of 19 extra points. He played 60 minutes, moving to safety on defense and returning punts. Several times he broke returns for more than 70 yards. He was named honorable mention AP All-State and was elected to Who's Who of American Colleges and Universities.
