Joe Cordova started his career at Gettysburg as a two-sport athlete and emerged as one of the most dominant offensive forces in the history of the baseball program.
Cordova spent two seasons on the Bullets football team and was a strong performer as a defensive back. He appeared in all 20 games and racked up 143 tackles. In 1994, Cordova finished second on the team with 70 stops as Gettysburg recorded an 8-2 overall record.
Switching gears to the baseball diamond in the spring, Cordova became one of the most feared hitters in the Centennial Conference. He hit over .400 twice, including a career-high .461 pace in 1996, which was the best batting average by a Bullet in five decades. Cordova was tagged All-Centennial Conference First Team and All-Middle Atlantic Region Second Team in each of his final two campaigns and as a senior, he hit .433 with 37 runs, 13 doubles, 32 RBI, and 13 stolen bases.
When it was all said and done, Cordova’s name littered the record books at Gettysburg. He finished as the school and conference leader in career batting average (.406) as well as the program’s all-time leader in runs (118), hits (190), doubles (39), triples (18), home runs (12), RBI (107), total bases (301), and slugging percentage (.643).
A native of Haddonfield, N.J., Cordova graduated from Gettysburg with a degree in management.
