World War II played a major role in Gettysburg College acquiring "Obie". He began his career at Muhlenburg as a freshman and played in the NIT tournament. However, following the war, some friends convinced him to matriculate to Gettysburg.
He became part of the greatest basketball era in Gettysburg history. Playing with six other great scorers, he managed to notch 771 career points, averaging well over 12 points per each of 72 contests.
He was not only a powerful, accurate set shot artist, but a disciplined playmaker as well. Besides being an extremely talented, unselfish basketball player, he also carried the highest academic average among all basketball players of his time.
His career was dotted with many great moments. He scored the winning basket in a 60-58 win over Lafayette; netted 14 points in a narrow 72-68 loss to Virginia; scored nine points against Princeton; and played Larry Foust of LaSalle goal-for-goal.
