For 44 years he hustled across football fields, basketball courts, baseball diamonds, wrestling mats and cinder tracks, patching lacerated eyebrows, broken bones, bruises, and battered bodies and dislocated shoulders, elbows and knees. He was the expert, when it came to curing athletic injuries. High schools and college coaches from throughout Pennsylvania and Maryland sent their athletes to him for treatment. Doctors, specialists and even his peers consulted with him on many occasion, seeking his advise on the treatment and cure of a wide variety of injuries.
He got his start under Lawson Robertson, U.S. Olympic Track and Field coach and trainer. Despite a degree in engineering he took up athletic training at the university of Pennsylvania and was there from 1922 to 1926.
He also served as the trainer for the Pennsylvania Big 3 high school all-stars and was called upon to treat the President of the United States, Dwight D. Eisenhower.
