Known as "Hunky" because of his size and "Hollywood" because of his looks, he was a true scholar-athlete. He came from Meriden High School in Connecticut. When he arrived in 1921 as a freshman, he established himself as the starting right tackle on the football team.

He was a steady, defiant performer, an excellent blocker on offense and a dangerous defensive weapon. He blocked punts and extra points. He had a banner year in 1923 when Gettysburg was 8-2 with losses only to Penn State and Lehigh. In the final game of 1924 he experienced a lineman's dream by picking up a loose ball and racing 20 yards for a touchdown against F. and M.

He graduated with a degree in Chemistry. He was Junior Class president and president of the student council as well as assistant editor of the school paper.
