GETTYSBURG, Pa. – Not even a steady, bone-chilling rain could hold back the Gettysburg College women's soccer team as the squad put up a season-high 32 shots in a 2-1 victory over visiting Washington (Md.) College in Centennial Conference action Saturday afternoon.
Gettysburg (8-4-1, 3-2-1 CC) kept warm on a cold and rainy day at Clark Field by keeping up a relentless attack on Washington's (5-7-1, 1-5-0 CC) goal. The Bullets fired off 21 shots in the opening half and wasted little time getting on the scoreboard as freshman
Casey Attanasio (Newtown, Pa./Council Rock North) slapped in a rebound off a saved shot by senior
Tara Gaston (Newtown, Pa./Newtown) just past the match's 10-minute mark. The score was Attanasio's fourth of the fall, tying her for the team lead, while Gaston picked up her second assist.
The Shorewomen were unable to take a stab at the Gettysburg goal in the opening period, but the visitors kept the score close behind thanks to goalkeeper Tori Ripple, who finished with a match-high nine saves.
At the start of the final half, the Bullets added an insurance goal with senior
Kelly Vigna (Wyckoff, N.J./Ramapo) getting into the action with a putback shot off a rebound for her first score of the season at 48:47. Attanasio picked up the assist on the play after putting a shot on goal that was turned away by Ripple.
Gettysburg emptied its bench at the end of the match and Washington took advantage with its first goal against the Bullets in eight years. The Shorewomen's score came off a corner kick as Stephanie Willingham's pass into the box was headed into the goal by Katie Bradley at 85:54.
Gettysburg finished with a decisive advantage in shots (32-2) and corner kicks (9-2).
Sophomore
Allie Rivera (Wading River, N.Y./Shoreham Wading River) played the first 51 minutes in goal for the Bullets without seeing a shot, while freshman
Carley Cesare (Boxborough, Mass./Acton Boxborough Regional) closed the door in the second half and made one save.
Next up for the Bullets is a Centennial Conference road trip to McDaniel College on Wednesday, Oct. 21, at 7 p.m.
