GETTYSBURG, Pa. – Two quick back-to-back goals in the second half helped lift No. 23 Swarthmore College to a 3-1 decision over Gettysburg College in Centennial Conference women's soccer action at Clark Field on Saturday.
Gettysburg (9-5-1, 4-3-1 CC) and Swarthmore (12-3-0, 6-2-0 CC) played to a standstill for the majority of the first half until Hannah Deming kicked the ball for what appeared to be a cross from the right side. The looping liner continued to arc towards the goal, however, and went over the out-stretched hands of Bullet keeper
Allie Rivera (Wading River, N.Y./Shoreham Wading River) into the far left corner in the 44th minute.
The skies unleashed in the second half, but the wet weather did little to deter the attack. Gettysburg struck just past the 50-minute mark as a scramble in front of the box resulted in a deflected shot to the left side. Senior
Kerry McKenna (Sharon, Conn./Kent School) tracked down the ball and kicked in her team-best fifth goal, tying the game at 1-1 at 50:46.
Swarthmore picked up the pressure in short time and scored the go-ahead goal just 10 minutes later as Hannah Purkey looped a shot over Rivera for her first score of the season at 60:38. After assisting on Purkey's shot, Garnet forward Elizabeth Mills got into the scoring column just over two minutes later by kicking in a rebound off a saved shot by Megan Colombo.
Freshman
Casey Attanasio (Newtown, Pa./Council Rock North) tried to bring the Bullets back with three shots in the final 12:18, but one was stopped by Garnet keeper Marie Mutryn and the other two were wide.
Swarthmore finished with an 18-9 advantage in shots, while Gettysburg led in corner kicks 3-2.
Attanasio finished with four shots and sophomore
Sam Hellerman (Smithtown, N.Y./Smithtown West) tallied two. Rivera logged eight saves in the loss.
Gettysburg closes out its home schedule by playing Dickinson College in a must-win contest on Tuesday, Oct. 27, at 7 p.m. Only two matches remain in the regular season with the Bullets sitting just outside the conference playoff picture in sixth.
