GETTYSBURG, Pa. – Hannah Richardson knocked in the game-winner in the 75th minute to lift Dickinson College past Gettysburg College 1-0 in a rain-soaked Centennial Conference affair on Tuesday night. The setback mathematically eliminated the Bullets from a berth in the conference tournament set for next week.
Gettysburg (9-6-1, 4-4-1 CC) controlled the tempo during the first half of play, holding high-scoring Dickinson (13-3, 6-3 CC) to just three shots, none of which were on goal. The Bullets turned in the lone attempt on goal in the opening period, but junior
Jordann Smak's (Mechanicsburg, Pa./Mechanicsburg) shot was picked off by Red Devil keeper Kailyn Hartmann.
In the second period, Dickinson came to life offensively, beginning with a string of corner kicks at the 50-minute mark. Twice the Red Devils connected on headers with one stopped by the left post and the second thwarted by Bullet goalie
Allie Rivera (Wading River, N.Y./Shoreham Wading River).
Dickinson finally found a seam in the Gettysburg defense with just over 15 minutes remaining in the contest. A ball from the midfield made its way up to Sarah Montminy on the right side and the conference's leader in assists raced down the field with the conference's leading scorer, Richardson, matching her stride-for-stride down the middle. After drawing out the lone defender, Montminy crossed the ball over to Richardson who looped a shot over Rivera that hit the bottom of the crossbar, bounced down, and bounced back up into the goal. After a short conference by the officials, the shot was ruled a score, giving the Red Devils a 1-0 lead at 74:47.
The visitors nearly made it a two-goal advantage in the 86th minute when Sara White corralled a deflected shot and chipped it over Rivera as she came out to retrieve the ball. Sophomore back
Chloe Zeltmann (Nesconset, N.Y./Smithtown East) jumped in front of the goal and headed the ball up and over to prevent the score.
Gettysburg posted all of its four second-half shots in the final 10 minutes of play, but Hartmann stopped half to preserve the shutout.
Dickinson finished with a 13-6 advantage in shots and led in corner kicks 8-2.
Sophomore
Sam Hellerman (Smithtown, N.Y./Smithtown West) and senior
Tara Gaston (Newtown, Conn./Newtown) each posted a pair of shots for Gettysburg and Rivera finished with a pair of saves.
Montminy led Dickinson with a trio of shots attempts, while Ashley Kunkle and White each posted two.
Gettysburg closes the season this Saturday, Oct. 31, with a match at Muhlenberg College (11-5, 8-1 CC) at 7 p.m. The Bullets can still play a part in the postseason by spoiling the Mules' bid to lockdown home-field advantage in the CC Tournament.
