Gaston, Smak Tabbed Academic All-District

Jordann Smak earned a spot on the Academic All-District Third Team.

GETTYSBURG, Pa. – Senior Tara Gaston (Newtown, Conn./Newtown) and junior Jordann Smak (Mechanicsburg, Pa./Mechanicsburg) were each selected to the 2009 ESPN The Magazine College Division Academic All-District II Third Team as voted on the College of Sports Information Directors of America (CoSIDA) and released on Thursday, Oct. 29.

A two-year captain and two-time All-Centennial Conference First Team selection, Gaston assumed a new role on the field this season as an attacking midfielder. She has started all 16 matches this fall and leads the team with 41 shots, while ranking third in both goals (4) and points (10). Three of Gaston's scores have gone for game-winners, including the team's only tally in overtime against York (Pa.) College on Oct. 15. A four-year starter, Gaston has played an integral role in the Bullets' defense, helping the team post 32 shutouts over the last four seasons. She is a biology major with a GPA of 3.50.

Smak earned a spot on the team by carrying the highest GPA on the list at 4.02 while majoring in biology. She has been a three-contributor in Gettysburg's midfield, appearing in 51 matches with 13 starts. After leading the Bullets in scoring with three goals last fall, Smak has tallied eight shots and a pair of assists in 16 matches this season. She also plays a key role for a defensive unit which has logged nine shutouts and a goals against average of 0.92 this year.

Gaston and Smak have helped the Bullets post a 9-6-1 record this fall, including 4-4-1 in the highly competitive Centennial Conference. They are the first women's soccer players to cop Academic All-District honors since Stephanie Heath '07 in 2006.

Nominees for Academic All-District must be starters or prominent reserves, be of sophomore or higher academic standing, and have a cumulative GPA of 3.30 or better. There are three teams selected in each district for soccer, with all members from the first team moving on to the national ballot for Academic All-America consideration.
