EMMITSBURG, Md. – The Gettysburg College men's tennis team kicked off its season by competing at the Mount St. Mary's Invitational on Oct. 3-4. Senior
Dale Beshore (Harrisburg, Pa./Central Dauphin East) and freshman
Chris Curran (Fairfield, Conn./Fairfield Ludlowe) captured third in Flight 'A' Doubles, while sophomore
Sebastian Rodriguez (Plano, Texas/Plano West) finished third in Flight 'C' Singles.
Beshore and Curran opened with an 8-2 decision over Loyola University's Ryan Fitzgerald and Kevin Zingler before suffering a loss by the same score to the eventual doubles champions from Mount St. Mary's. The Bullet tandem bounced back in the third-place match for an 8-4 victory over another pair from Loyola. Beshore also placed seventh in singles competition in the 'A' flight, while Curran polished off a successful collegiate debut with a fourth-place effort in the same flight.
Rodriguez notched Gettysburg's highest finish in singles competition. He won his opening bout against Millersville University's Don Swantko 7-6, 6-0 before he too was upended by the eventual champion at that flight 6-3, 6-1. Rodriguez capped his day in singles competition with victory over Tim Koch of Loyola 7-5, 6-1.
Rodriguez renewed his partnership with fellow sophomore
Terry Keegan (Fairfield, Conn./Fairfield Prep) in Flight 'A' Doubles and came through for a fifth-place finish. After suffering an 8-6 setback in their opening match, the duo earned a default victory and posted a 9-8 (11-9) marathon decision in the fifth-place finale.
Gettysburg grabbed fourth and fifth in Flight 'B' Doubles as well. Sophomore
Mike McLaughlin (Hanover, Pa./South Western) and freshman
Johnny Nelson (Big Prairie, Ohio/West Holmes) placed fourth after starting the tournament with an 8-3 victory, while senior
Kevin Raynes (Northumberland, Pa./Shikellamy) and freshman
Juri Jacoby (San Francisco, Calif./Saint Ignatius College Prep) bounced back from an opening loss to win their final two bouts, including notching an 8-3 victory over Millersville's Colton Brown and Marty O'Hara in the fifth-place match.
In Flight 'D' Singles, Raynes rebounded from a three-set loss in his first bout to beat a pair of Mount St. Mary's players and finish fifth. He downed Reilly Gates 6-1, 6-2 and closed with a 7-6, 0-6, 10-7 decision over Jastin Mostowtt.
Gettysburg closes out the fall portion of its schedule against Shepherd University at home on Wednesday, Oct. 7, at 3:30 p.m.
