Men's Lacrosse Names 2010 Captains

Kyle McGrath was an All-Centennial selection in 2009.
GETTYSBURG, Pa. - The Gettysburg College men's lacrosse team announced its captains for the 2010 season. Seniors Joe Brody (Bethesda, Md. / Walter Johnson), Tim Kurpis (Yorktown, N.Y. / Yorktown), Kyle McGrath (Randolph, N.J. / Randolph), and Alex White (Easton, Ct. / Joel Barlow) were named to the position by Coach Hank Janczyk on Nov. 17. The four were elected by team vote and will all be serving in the position for the first time.

Over the past three seasons, this group has helped the Bullets to a record of 49 wins and 10 losses, for a winning percentage of 83 percent. They have won three Centennial Conference championships, reached the NCAA semifinals in 2007 and 2008, and played in the national championship in 2009.

“Never have we had such a complete group in terms of maturity, athleticism, lacrosse knowledge, and academic responsibility,” said Coach Janczyk.

A three-year starter, Brody is coming off a year in which he was the team's leader in assists and points with 33 and 53. Equally adept at feeding and finishing, Brody was the leading goal scorer on the team in 2008 (51 goals), and 2007 (36 goals). With 162 points on 107 goals and 55 assists, Brody is poised to break into the program's top-10 rankings for career goals, assists, and points. A second team All-American in 2008, Brody has been honored with All-Centennial recognition in each of his three seasons.

A two-year starter, Kurpis is the Bullets' lone returning All-American from the 2009 season, having been selected as an honorable mention. A true student-athlete, Kurpis was also honored as an ESPN The Magazine Academic All-American in the Men's At-Large College Division. The second men's lacrosse player at Gettysburg to earn Academic All-America honors (Chase Stewart '06), Kurpis carries 4.04 cumulative grade-point average with a double major in economics and mathematics. Kurpis was a leading force on defense for the Bullets in 2009, starting all 20 contests and ranking among the team leaders with 42 ground balls and 24 caused turnovers. He also earned first-team All-Centennial Conference honors.

McGrath broke out in 2009, racking up 41 points on 31 goals and 10 assists, while serving as a key player in the midfield during the Bullets' run to the national championship game. For his efforts, McGrath earned his first All-Conference selection, garnering second team honors. The team's leading scorer from the midfield, McGrath was the Bullet most likely to shoot in 2009, averaging 5.5 shots per game. He scored one game-winning goal, while picking up 27 ground balls and winning 9 of 16 faceoffs (56.2 percent).

As the team's top defensive midfielder in 2009, White was one of the leaders of a defense that ranked 20th nationally with an average of 7.45 goals against. A physical presence and strong communicator, White set a career best in 2009 by playing in all 20 games, scooping up 12 ground balls and causing two turnovers.

The Bullets will open up the 2010 season at home against Messiah College on Feb. 24 at 3:30 p.m.
