SALEM, Va. – Senior quarterback
Matt Flynn (Northfield, N.J./Mainland Regional) of the Gettysburg College football team has been invited to compete in the inaugural D3 Senior Classic, to be held this Saturday at 2 p.m. in Salem, Va.
The game, presented by the Collegiate Development Football League, will feature 90 players from 238 Division III football programs. It will be held at Salem Stadium, home of the annual NCAA Division III football championship game (Stagg Bowl), and feature a North vs. South format. Flynn is a member of the South team.
Flynn capped a brilliant career with a record-setting senior season in 2009. An All-Centennial Conference Honorable Mention selection, he finished the year with 2,714 passing yards, 198 completions, and 19 touchdown passes while completing 59.6 percent of his aerials. In addition, he rushed for 357 yards and four TDs and finished with 3,071 yards of total offense.
Flynn concluded the year with school records for passing yards, completions, and total offense, and he tied the Gettysburg season mark for TD passes. He also set a Centennial Conference single-season standard for total offense and surpassed the previous conference mark for passing yards, although his mark was also bettered by another conference QB this year. He ranks 13th in Division III in total offense and 23rd in passing yards.
In the most impressive performance of his career, Flynn set Gettysburg and Centennial Conference records for passing yards (517), touchdown passes (seven), and total offense (522 yards) in a 55-50 loss at Ursinus College. He also threw for over 300 yards in three other games and rushed for a career-high 124 yards against Juniata.
For his career, Flynn finished with both Centennial Conference and school records for passing yards (7,921), total offense (9,049 yards) and Gettysburg records for touchdown passes (56), touchdowns responsible for (67), pass attempts (1,059), and pass completions (577).
Gettysburg finished the season 3-7 and 3-5 in the Centennial Conference to finish tied for fifth in the conference standings.
