2009 ECAC Division III Southwest All-Stars
CENTERVILLE, Mass. – Junior tailback
Jamel Mutunga (Bel Air, Md./Bel Air) was named to the Eastern College Athletic Conference (ECAC) Southwest All-Star Team according to a recent release by the organization. Mutunga, who earned his first ECAC accolade, was the lone Bullet on the team.
A first-team All-Centennial Conference selection in 2009, Mutunga turned in his best season at tailback as a member of the Gettysburg College football team. He posted his first 1,000-yard rushing campaign with 1,015 and finished second in the conference in yards per game at 101.5. Mutunga also finished second in the league in scoring with 16 touchdowns and finished one score shy of the school mark for rushing TDs with 14. He also ended the year fifth in the CC in all-purpose yards at 128.3 per game.
Mutunga went over 100 rushing yards in a game five times this season, including a career-high 149 at Moravian College on Oct. 10. He scored a touchdown in all but one game this fall and tied a school rushing record by finding the end zone five times against Juniata College on Oct. 17.
Through three seasons on the gridiron, Mutunga ranks eighth in school history in rushing yards (1,931) and is tied for seventh in rushing touchdowns (23).
Mutunga is the seventh Bullet tailback or fullback to earn ECAC accolades, joining Tom Sturges (2005-07), Paul Smith (1997-99), Dwayne Marcus (1992, 1994), Paul Martin (1985), Ray Condren (1983-84), and Scott Dudak (1980-81). Noteworthy, all of the previous backs to earn ECAC accolades were also tabbed All-America in their senior seasons.
Gettysburg, which featured one of the nation's top offenses, finished the year 3-7 overall and 3-5 in the Centennial Conference.
