First Round Results
NEW TRIPOLI, Pa. – Freshman
Caroline Nathan (Bethesda, Md./Walt Whitman) carded an 84 to lead Gettysburg College to a second-place effort on the first day of competition at the Centennial Conference Championships hosted by the Olde Homestead Golf Course in New Tripoli, Pa. Nathan has a four-stroke lead on the competition, while the defending champion Bullets are six strokes behind McDaniel College in the team standings.
McDaniel posted a 356 on the opening day with all five of its starters holding positions in the top eight, while Gettysburg was second at 362 and had four of the top nine overall. Franklin & Marshall College (407), Dickinson College (438), and Muhlenberg College (450) were well off the pace set by the top-two squads.
Nathan was one off her personal-best round this season with a 12-over 84 on the par-72, 5,800-yard course, finishing four strokes ahead of McDaniel's Valerie Saucier and Jennie Weiner. Sophomore
Alex Moran (Boxford, Mass./The Governor's Academy) put in a career-low round of 92, finishing in a tie for sixth overall and improving 16 strokes on her best championship round last spring. She finished tied with teammate
Shelby Glass (Fair Haven, N.J./Rumson-Fair Haven Regional), who was right at her season average with a 92.
Last year's CC runner-up, sophomore
Leah Tuscano (Aurora, Ill./Waubonsie Valley), finished tied for ninth overall with a 94. Sophomore
Marybeth Scott (Chester Springs, Pa./The Hill School) rounded out Gettysburg's starting five in a tie for 12th with a first-round score of 100.
Gettysburg, which trailed McDaniel by eight strokes at last season's competition, will look to make up ground during Sunday's final round of competition. Opening tee times are slated for noon at Olde Homestead.
