GETTYSBURG, Pa. – Franklin & Marshall College made the most of its first trip to Gettysburg College's new pool, sweeping by the Bullets in the final dual meet of the year for both squads. The Diplomat men won by a score of 122-83, while the women ended the host's winning streak against Centennial Conference foes at 20 with a 110-95 decision.
Franklin & Marshall (7-2, 7-0 CC) ended Gettysburg's (8-2, 6-1 CC) dual-meet conference domination by winning seven of 11 events on the afternoon, including both relay events. On the men's side, F&M (6-2, 6-0 CC) polished off a perfect regular season by winning all but three events.
The Bullet women turned in four individual wins on the day with freshman
Caroline Coolidge (South Windsor, Conn./Kingswood-Oxford) turning in two of the most exciting finishes. She won the 500 free in comeback style by erasing a near-two second deficit at the start of the final 100, closing with a time of 5:20.85, just 0.07 ahead of the runner-up. Her race in the 200 IM was even closer as she narrowly missed another win with a time of 2:15.47, just 0.04 behind Katherine DeCrosta.
Senior
Patrice Boucher (Bryn Mawr, Pa./The Shipley School) placed just behind DeCrosta and Coolidge in the 200 IM with a season-best time of 2:16.30, while taking the top spot in the 200 back (2:14.88). Freshman
Brooke Lacey (Darien, Conn./Darien) recorded a PR in the 200 breaststroke with 2:29.25 to beat out teammate and classmate
Katie Timmerman (Norwalk, Conn./Brien McMahon) by just over a second (2:30.57).
Junior
Maggie Mulderrig (Baltimore, Md./Notre Dame Prep) was Gettysburg's other winner with a first-place finish in the 50 free (25.41). Mulderrig also placed second in the 100 free (56.37).
On the men's side, sophomore
Matt Libby (Freeport, Maine/Cheverus) continued his domination by winning two individual events and anchoring the winning 400 free relay. He missed a pair of NCAA “B” cuts by less than a second apiece in winning the 100 and 200 free events, recording 47.01 and 1:43.30, respectively. Libby did not lose a single individual event (10-0) against a conference foe this year.
In the day's final event, the all-sophomore team of
Drew Close (Berwyn, Pa./Haverford School),
Tom Everett (Timonium, Md./McDonough School),
Paul Besancon (Cherry Hill, N.J./Cherry Hill West), and Libby closed with a time of 3:14.52 in the 400 free relay to garner a victory.
Sophomore
Pat McDevitt (Drexel Hill, Pa./Monsignor Bonner) posted a pair of season-best times with second-place finishes in the 1,000 free (10:27.56) and in the 200 back (2:01.78). Everett placed second in the 50 free with a time of 22.53, just 0.04 ahead of Close in third. Close added a runner-up showing in the 500 free by completing the distance in 4:55.68.
The Bullets will now prepare for the Centennial Conference Swimming Championships hosted by Franklin & Marshall inside the Kunkle Aquatic Center from Feb. 19-21. Gettysburg's women's team is the three-time defending champions, while the men's team is coming off a third-place finish last winter.
