GRANTHAM and LEWISBURG, Pa. – Junior
Yaa Addison and freshman
Edward Makinde each won an event to lead the Gettysburg College track & field teams at the Messiah College Invitational, which concluded on Saturday.
The men's team scored 59 points to place fifth out of 13 teams while the women's squad finished with 66 points and placed sixth among 11 teams. Messiah won both team titles.
Makinde captured the triple jump with a personal record (PR) of 42-9, a mark that also moves him into 10th on Gettysburg's all-time list in the event. Sophomore
Cole Rossiter slashed two minutes off his PR to place second in the 10,000-meter run with a time of 34:35.68 while junior
Tyler Keith also clocked a PR, taking fourth out of 43 competitors in the 1,500-meter run in 4:11.57.
Also placing fourth were junior
Will Demakis in the 400-meter hurdles (59.80), freshman
Ryan Matzke in the 3,000-meter steeplechase (10:36.37), and junior
Tom Senseney in the decathlon, which was held on Thursday and Friday. Competing in the event for the first time, Senseney finished with 5,316 points, a score that puts him sixth in school history.
Also cracking the top-eight to earn team points were sophomore
Patrick Hill, who was sixth with a PR of 1:56.12 in the 800, freshman
Ethan Miller, who placed sixth in the 10,000 in 36:03.32, and junior
Andrew Bay, who took seventh in the 100 (11.33) and eighth with a PR of 23.11 in the 200.
Addison turned in a solid double for the Bullets, winning the 1,500 with a PR of 5:01.66 and taking fourth in the 800 in 2:28.46.
Three Bullets placed third, including junior
Kerry Campbell, who logged a PR of 5:04.70 in the 1,500. Freshman
Meagan Lesniak placed third in the 5,000 (19:44.46), as did classmates
Bella Baxter in the 10,000 (42:55.13) and
Danielle Bernini in the high jump (4-11 3/4, PR).
Gettysburg also had three athletes compete in the heptathlon, with senior
Alexandra Van Tuyl finishing fourth out of 13 competitors with 3,561 points. Competing in the event for the first time were freshmen
Madison Senseney and
Cari McMaster, who finished seventh and ninth with 2,910 points and 2,811 points, respectively.
Others breaking the top-eight were freshman
Jackie Marotto in the 10,000 (fourth, 43:21.57), freshman
Alyssa Beyer in the 400 dash (sixth, 1:07.13), sophomore
Celia Hartz in the discus (sixth, 104-5) and the javelin (seventh, 104-5), sophomore
Eva Hinkeldey in the pole vault (tied for seventh, 8-8 1/4), junior
Amanda Koslo in the 200 (eighth, 27.72), and freshman
Bridget Golato in the 5,000 (eighth, 21:33.42).
Also on Saturday, three Bullets competed at the Bison Outdoor Classic, hosted by Bucknell University, and all three set PRs while running against Division I, II, and III competition. For the women's team, senior
Amanda Pellowe placed 66th in a field of 98 in the 1,500 in 4:52.77, which ranks 10th all-time at Gettysburg. Sophomore
Alex Bull was clocked at 39:08.81 in the 10,000 to finish 27th out of 31 runners, and her time made her the eighth-best in school history in the event.
For the men's team at Bucknell, junior
Joe Sharp took 71st out of 94 runners in the 1,500 with a time of 4:05.05.
The Bullets continue their season next Saturday at the Gettysburg Mason-Dixon Invitational in Musselman Stadium.
