Championship Team Previews
Gettysburg College (17-10 Overall, 9-1 Centennial Conference)
Head Coach: Alexa Keckler (5th Season, 76-45)
Gettysburg ha s been the most dominant team in the Centennial Conference since its inception with 11 conference titles in 15 years. The Bullets have never missed a CC Tournament, appearing in all 11 instances and winning it seven times. Gettysburg enters the postseason as one of the hottest teams in the conference, having won six-straight matches and nine of their last 10 overall. On the front line, the Orange & Blue feature a balanced attack with four players posting over 150 kills this season. Sophomore middle hitter Kate Yoder (pictured) leads the way with 2.35 kills per set and ended the season in strong fashion, tying her career-high with 16 kills against Muhlenberg. Junior right-side Kristina Mercier is next on kill list with 2.28 per set, while senior Meghan McConville and junior Stephanie Rickabaugh are just under two kills per set. Junior setter and two-time all-conference pick Amanda Krampf paces the attack with 8.05 assists per set in addition to leading the team with 29 service aces and ranking second with 3.38 digs per set. Gettysburg’s defense is solid front and back, with Yoder leading the way with 56 total blocks and junior libero Kristin Kotewicz posting a conference-best five digs per set.
Haverford College (22-6 Overall, 9-1 Centennial Conference)
Head Coach: Amy Bergin (7th Season, 154-56)
Haverford is the two-time defending champion and is aiming to become the first three-peat winner since Gettysburg won five in a row from 2001 to 2005. This is the ninth-straight appearance for Haverford in the CC Tournament. The Fords have managed an impressive track record this fall as five of their six losses have come to teams currently ranked in the American Volleyball Coaches Association’s top 25. A lot of the team’s success can be attributed to their All-American twin sisters, Rebecca (pictured) and Rachel Salvo. Both players average well over three kills per set, ranking among the conference leaders. Rebecca and Rachel also reached the 1,000-kill mark for their careers earlier this fall. Despite the graduation of the conference’s all-time assist leader, there hasn’t been too much of a letdown as freshman Kate Comey is averaging 10.33 assists per set with fellow first-year Becca DeHority averaging almost four helpers. Defensively, the Salvo sisters lead the way with a combined seven digs per set, while Jenine Abbassi paces the team with 47 total blocks. Franny Glick is another dual threat for the Fords, averaging 2.12 kills and 2.78 digs per set.
Johns Hopkins University (20-6 Overall, 8-2 Centennial Conference)
Head Coach: Greg Giovanazzi (1st Season, 20-6)
The preseason favorite to win the Centennial crown, Johns Hopkins has a shot to win its first conference title. The Blue Jays have appeared in all but one conference tournament since 1997 and have lost twice in the championship match in 2000 to Franklin & Marshall and 2003 to Gettysburg. This fall’s club is aiming to rectify that with some of the most talented players in the CC, led by senior setter Amanda Lewis (pictured). Lewis is a versatile player that can set up the offense or attack on her own, as evidenced by averages of 8.02 assists and 1.41 kills per set. In handing Gettysburg its only conference loss, she posted a triple-double with 11 kills, 37 assists, and 14 digs. Additionally, she is just 73 assists shy of the conference’s all-time assist mark. Lewis handles an attack that averages just under 12 kills per set, led by Allison Cappelaere and Alex Zenoff at 2.21 and 2.20, respectively. Middle hitter Adrienne Young forms an imposing figure on the net at 6-1 and leads the team with 64 total blocks. Zenoff and Young also rank 2-3 in the conference in attack percentage with Lewis just behind in fifth. When a ball makes it past the blockers, the back row is more than ready with a well-balanced crew led by Lewis and Cappelaere at about three digs per set apiece.
Franklin & Marshall College (12-15 Overall, 7-3 Centennial Conference)
Head Coach: Mary Kate Boland (6th Season, 107- 68)
Franklin & Marshall surged into the postseason with four-straight wins, including rebounding from a 2-1 deficit to beat Swarthmore on the final day of the season. The Diplomats return to the CC Tournament after missing the playoffs for just the second time last fall. The team trails only Gettysburg with four team championships, the last coming in 2000. After starting the season 1-11, Franklin & Marshall won 11 of its final 15 matches. Senior outside hitter Margot Phelan (pictured) is the squad’s most accomplished player as a three-time first-team all-conference selection and former AVCA All-American. One of the most versatile players in the conference, she paces the Dips with 2.82 kills and 3.34 digs per set on the year. She is complemented on the frontline by 6-0 middle hitter Nicole Morano and 5-9 right-side Erica Spangler. Morano averages 2.21 kills per set and leads the team in attack percentage (.261) and total blocks (64), while Spangler averages two kills and 2.55 digs. Liz Power is second only to Phelan in digs at just under three per set, while Pam Horner has tallied 2.38 digs per set to go with a team-best 40 service aces.
Dickinson College (11-13 Overall, 6-4 Centennial Conference)
Head Coach: Carli Lehr (4th Season, 43-62)
Dickinson is making its third-straight trip to the conference tournament and fourth overall. The Red Devils’ only losses in Centennial play came to the top four finishers in the standings. Dickinson is one of the conference’s most potent serving teams with six players posting over 20 aces this fall and the team as a whole averaging over two aces per set. Senior setter Amanda Lehn (pictured) paves the way with 39 aces in addition to 8.61 assists and 2.75 digs per set. A trio of Devils has handled most of Lehn’s sets as Kristen Lee, Elitsa Gosheva, and Chelsea Winkert all average over two kills per set. Lee paces the team with 3.14 kills, while Gosheva is second at 2.71. Junior libero Amanda Hayes ranks third in the conference at 4.37 digs per set, including an impressive average of 5.5 in Centennial play. Allison Molchany leads the squad with 62 total blocks.
Digging for a Cure
In addition to crowning a conference champion this weekend, the Centennial Conference schools will be giving a check to Living Beyond Breast Cancer following their participation Digging for a Cure. Each school took pledges for each dig they recorded in selected matches throughout the month of October with all the proceeds going directly to the LBBC to aid in the fight against breast cancer. The check presentation will take place between Saturday's two semifinal matches.
