E-mail Coach Cantele
Carol Cantele has molded the Gettysburg College women’s lacrosse team into one of the premier programs across NCAA Division III over the course of her 16 seasons at the helm. She is Gettysburg’s all-time leader in victories, compiling a career record of 214-76 (.738) and ranking among the top 10 among all active NCAA coaches (all divisions) in both wins and winning percentage.
Cantele, who is the seventh winningest active Division III coach by percentage and wins, has guided the Bullets to a conference record six Centennial Conference championships (2000, 2002-06), eight appearances in the NCAA Division III playoffs (2000, 2002-08), and 12-straight winning seasons. Cantele has coached 23 Bullets to Intercollegiate Women’s Lacrosse Coaches Association (IWLCA) All-America recognition, including the 2003 Offensive Player of the Year (Megan Murphy) and the 2005 Defender of the Year (Kate Murphy).
In 2008, Gettysburg earned its seventh consecutive bid to the NCAA Tournament and finished the season with a 17-4 overall record – the seventh-straight season of 15 or more wins for the program. The Bullets finished second in the conference regular season and tournament, ending the former with an 8-1 mark. Among the season’s many accomplishments include wins over three nationally-ranked programs (Mary Washington, Middlebury, Dickinson), a 12-game winning streak to start the year, and a program-best four IWLCA All-Americans. Cantele’s squad was ranked as high as second in the national polls during the regular season and was among the national leaders in total points, scoring offense, and scoring defense.
Cantele guided Gettysburg to back-to-back appearances in the national semifinals in 2006 and 2007. In the former year, she led Gettysburg to its best season in school history, as the Bullets finished 21-1, enjoyed a program-record 21-game winning streak, were ranked No. 1 in the nation for the first time, won their fifth consecutive Centennial Conference championship, and advanced to the NCAA semifinals for the first time before finishing as the national runner-up. She was honored as the IWLCA, Inside Lacrosse, and womenslacrosse.com NCAA Division III Coach of the Year. For an encore in 2007, Cantele once again led her team to the semifinals following a year in which the Bullets beat the top-ranked team, The College of New Jersey, 9-8 in overtime and achieved a No. 1 ranking during the regular season.
A four-time Metro Region Coach of the Year, Cantele first earned the region’s top coaching honor in 2000 after guiding the Bullets to a then program-record 17 victories and their first-ever Centennial Conference title and NCAA appearance. In those NCAA playoffs, Gettysburg advanced to the national quarterfinals.
Cantele reached a coaching milestone in 2008 with her 200th career victory when Gettysburg defeated Gwynedd-Mercy College 21-2 on March 3, becoming just the ninth NCAA Division III coach to accomplish the feat. On April 10, 2002, Cantele became the program’s all-time coaching victories leader and the first Gettysburg women’s lacrosse coach to win 100 games when the Bullets downed Dickinson College, 16-9. She led her 1995, 1997, and 2001 squads to the Eastern College Athletic Conference Division III Mid-Atlantic playoffs, capturing the championship in 1995.
Cantele also compiled a school-record 121 coaching victories and five conference championships in 10 years with the Gettysburg field hockey program before resigning in 2002 to focus on women’s lacrosse and her new role as Gettysburg’s senior women’s administrator. She is a 1983 graduate of Gettysburg and played both field hockey and lacrosse as an undergraduate. She was a member of the 1980 field hockey team that captured Gettysburg’s only team national championship.
Cantele resides in Gettysburg with her husband, Mike, who is the head athletic trainer at Gettysburg College.
