E-mail Coach Campo
John Campo begins his 23rd season as the Bullet head coach. Campo enters 2008-09 as the school’s all-time wins leader with a career record of 388-376-11 (.508 winning percentage).
Campo’s teams have enjoyed a great amount of success over the last decade, posting five 20-win seasons since 1999. The 2007 squad posted a record of 26-13, tying for second all-time for wins in a single season. Sporting a 12-6 record at the end of league play, the Bullets clinched a spot in the Centennial Conference Tournament for the second time in three seasons before bowing out to nationally-ranked Johns Hopkins University in extra innings. The awards flooded in for Campo’s players as six were tabbed all-conference, including the first CC Player or Pitcher of the Year in program history, while one earned all-region accolades and another player picked up Academic All-America honors.
Campo’s coaching career took off from the start at Gettysburg as he led the team to four divisional titles in the Middle Atlantic Conference and the overall conference championship in 1987. The following year, the team posted a school-record 28 wins en route to its only appearance in the NCAA Tournament. Campo has also led his team to the ECAC Tournament twice, including advancing all the way to the championship game of the 2001 Mid-Atlantic Region Tournament.
In addition, 64 of his players have received all-conference recognition, along with 15 all-region players, three conference MVPs, one All-American, one Academic All-American and one professional draft choice. He has twice been selected as conference coach of the year.
Campo joined the Gettysburg staff in the fall of 1985 as the defensive coordinator of the football team and the assistant baseball coach. He spent 22 years with the Bullet football team before giving up his duties following the 2006 season. Prior to arriving at Gettysburg, Campo was the defensive coordinator at the U.S. Merchant Marine Academy.
A native of Staten Island, N.Y., Campo is a 1977 graduate of the University of Delaware and received his master's degree from Queens College in 1983. In addition to his duties as head baseball coach, he serves as the facilities coordinator for the athletic department. He is a member of both the American Baseball Coaches Association and the American Football Coaches Association.
Campo and his wife, Regina, are the parents of three sons: Mark, a 2007 Gettysburg graduate and member of the baseball and football teams, Danny, and Zachary. They reside in Arendtsville, Pa.
