Five student-athletes and three teams have claimed the highest honor available in their respective fields of play as national champions.
Joseph Bavaro '66 was the first Bullet to cop the nation's top honor when he won the College Division wrestling title in his weight class in 1965. He was also the first repeat winner in school history, joined 20-plus years later by 1992 graduate
Lynne Cassidy, a repeat national champion in the 500-yard freestyle as a member of the women's swimming team.
Gettysburg has claimed four team national titles. The field hockey program captured the first by winning the Association for Intercollegiate Athletics for Women (AIAW) Division III crown in 1980. In 2011, women's lacrosse took home the school's first NCAA Division III title by knocking off Bowdoin College 16-5. The lacrosse program won back-to-back titles in 2017 and 2018, beating No. 1 TCNJ 6-5 in the former year and taking down No. 4 Middlebury College 11-9 in the latter.
