Hank Janczyk

Hank Janczyk

One of the most successful lacrosse coaches in NCAA history, Hank Janczyk will take to the sidelines for his 34th season at the helm of the Gettysburg College men’s lacrosse team in 2021.

With a career record of 473-148 (428-124 at Gettysburg), Janczyk ranks second in NCAA history in men's lacrosse coaching victories (all divisions). He became just the second NCAA men's lacrosse coach to reach 400 wins when Gettysburg defeated Franklin & Marshall College 10-8 on April 22, 2015.

Janczyk has never had a losing season at Gettysburg, and the Bullets have posted at least 11 wins in 26 of 33 years under his direction. He has coached the Bullets to an appearance in the Centennial Conference playoffs in all 19 years the league has held a conference tournament, with Gettysburg reaching the CC championship game 16 times. Eleven of Janczyk’s teams have reached the national semifinals, with his 2001, 2002, and 2009 squads making it to the championship game.

Gettysburg made a run all the way to the NCAA Division III semifinals in 2018. The Bullets knocked off six nationally-ranked teams during the year, including a dramatic double-overtime win over then-No. 1 Salisbury University at Shirk Field at Musselman Stadium. Nine players were named All-Centennial Conference, including Defensive Player of the Year Mitch Wykoff ’20. Additionally, seven Bullets went on to earn All-America recognition from the United States Intercollegiate Lacrosse Association (USILA).

Janczyk guided the Bullets to back-to-back Centennial Conference titles while advancing to the NCAA Division III semifinals in both 2015 and 2016. In 2015, Gettysburg finished 20-1 and set a school record for wins after opening on a program-record 20-game winning streak. The team went 17-3 in 2016 and six Bullets were named All-America, including first-team honorees Jameson Smith ’16 and Geoff Davis ’16.

In 2010, Janczyk led Gettysburg to a 15-3 record, and early in the season the team spent three weeks ranked No. 1 in the United States Intercollegiate Lacrosse Association (USILA) Division III poll before finishing at No. 4. One year earlier, Gettysburg tied a school record with 14 straight wins leading up to the program's third appearance in the NCAA Division III national championship game.

Janczyk’s 2001 Bullets also won 14 straight games and set a then-school record for wins in a season (16) en route to the program’s first-ever national title game appearance. As a result, he earned the 2001 Babe Kraus Award as the Division III Coach of the Year, an honor he first won in 1984 at Salisbury. On April 7, 2001, he earned his 200th career coaching victory with a 14-10 win over Western Maryland.
The following year, the Bullets again broke the program record for victories in a season (17) and ascended to No. 1 in the national rankings for the third time in four years.

During his tenure, the 1976 graduate of Hobart College has guided the Bullets to 19 conference titles. Under Janczyk, Gettysburg has made 26 appearances in the NCAA Division III playoffs – a feat that has been accomplished by just three other Division III schools. Gettysburg student-athletes have garnered 160 All-America awards under Janczyk's tutelage, and six players have captured a total of seven Division III positional player of the year awards. In addition, he coached the program's first-ever Division III overall national player of the year when long stick midfielder Tommy Kehoe ’09 won the Iroquois National Award in 2009. Additionally, the Bullets have racked up 193 all-conference selections and 13 Player of the Year Awards over the last 26 years of competition in the Centennial Conference.

In 2008 Janczyk won the USILA Howdy Myers Man of the Year Award, presented to an individual who has contributed to the game of lacrosse in a capacity over and above the normal efforts and has shown unselfish and untiring devotion to the game.

At Hobart, Janczyk earned three varsity letters as a defenseman on the lacrosse team. He played on a pair of NCAA Division III runners-up and captained Hobart's 1976 national championship squad. He was inducted into the 2010 class of the Hobart Hall of Fame as well as the Rochester Chapter of the U.S. Lacrosse Hall of Fame (class of 2013).

Following several assistant coaching positions, Janczyk was named the head coach at Salisbury, where his teams posted a three-year record of 33-12. He coached Colgate University to a 12-12 record in 1986-87 before arriving in Gettysburg.
