John Campo heads into his 36th season at the helm of the baseball program at Gettysburg College in 2021-22. He is the program’s all-time leader in wins with a career record of 626-579-4.
Â
Under Campo, Gettysburg has posted a dozen 20-win seasons, including back-to-back campaigns with 30-plus wins in 2013-14. The 30-win campaigns came in the midst of a streak of six-straight 20-win seasons, marking the longest run of 20-win campaigns in program history. In 2014, he led the Bullets to one of the most successful years in program history. For the second season in a row, Gettysburg set a team record for victories, finishing 33-8 and winning 23 straight games at one point. The Bullets also went 15-3 in league play, finished runner-up in the conference playoffs, and earned a national ranking for six straight weeks late in the year. A program-record 10 Bullets were named to the All-Centennial Conference Team, including the club’s first-ever CC Player of the Year. The team tied a program record by collecting four all-region selections.
Â
In 2017, Campo led the Bullets to the Centennial Conference playoffs for the fourth time in five seasons. The team finished with a record of 22-17-2, marking Gettysburg’s sixth-straight 20-win season. Campo’s players earned four all-conference awards, one Centennial Conference Pitcher of the Year award, and three all-region citations. In addition, one of his players, outfielder
Connor Tom ’17, earned CoSIDA Academic All-America First Team and was named the Centennial Conference Baseball Scholar-Athlete of the Year.
Â
One year earlier, Campo's squad set a then-program record for victories by finishing 30-13 and 13-5 in the Centennial Conference to place second in the league standings. The Bullets played their first-ever home conference playoff game, defeating Haverford College 5-3 before bowing out of the tournament with a pair of one-run losses. In addition, Campo's squad won 10 straight games midway through the season, captured 15 of its final 18 games, and had a then program-record seven players earn All-Centennial Conference recognition to go with four all-region selections.
The 2007 squad posted a record of 26-13, tying for second all-time for wins in a single season. Sporting a 12-6 record at the end of league play, the Bullets clinched a spot in the Centennial Conference Tournament for the second time in three seasons. The awards flooded in for Campo’s players as six were tabbed all-conference, including the first CC Player or Pitcher of the Year in program history, while one earned all-region accolades and another player picked up Academic All-America honors.
Campo’s coaching tenure at Gettysburg started with a bang as he led the team to four divisional titles in the Middle Atlantic Conference and the overall conference championship in 1987. The following year, the team posted a then-school-record 28 wins en route to an appearance in the NCAA Tournament.
Campo has also led his team to the ECAC Tournament twice, including advancing all the way to the championship game of the 2001 Mid-Atlantic Region Tournament. In addition, 98 of his players have received all-conference recognition, along with 22 all-region players, five conference MVPs, one All-American, three Academic All-Americans, and one professional draft choice. He has been selected as conference coach of the year on four occasions including twice in the Centennial Conference (2013, 2014).
Campo joined the Gettysburg staff in the fall of 1985 as the defensive coordinator of the football team and the assistant baseball coach. He spent 22 years with the Bullets football team before giving up his duties following the 2006 season. Prior to arriving at Gettysburg, Campo was the defensive coordinator at the U.S. Merchant Marine Academy.
A native of Staten Island, N.Y., Campo is a 1977 graduate of the University of Delaware and received his master's degree from Queens College in 1983. In addition to his duties as head baseball coach, he serves as the facilities coordinator for the athletic department. He is a member of both the American Baseball Coaches Association and the American Football Coaches Association. In 2007, Campo was inducted into the Adams County Sports Hall of Fame. In addition to his collegiate coaching duties, he coached the Biglerville Post 262 American Legion team from 2008 to 2011.
Campo and his wife Regina, who recently retired after a long tenure as the Director of Human Resources at Gettysburg, are the parents of three sons: Mark, Danny, and Zachary. Mark is a 2007 Gettysburg graduate and former member of the baseball and football teams.
