Mike Kirkpatrick is entering his 20th season at the helm of Gettysburg’s women’s basketball program. The school’s all-time winningest coach, Kirkpatrick boasts a record of 257-209 and has led the Bullets to the Centennial Conference playoffs seven times.
Since posting a 5-17 record his rookie year, Kirkpatrick has guided Gettysburg to at least 10 victories in 18 consecutive seasons, including the program’s second 20-win season in 1994-95. That team earned a berth in the NCAA Division III Tournament and defeated the University of Scranton in the opening round. In 2000-01, the Bullets reeled off 11 consecutive victories and earned votes in the Division III rankings. In addition, he led Gettysburg to the CC playoffs in 1995, 1997, 2003, 2005, 2006, 2007, and 2008.
In 2007-08, Kirkpatrick led his team to an 18-10 overall record and its third-straight 12-6 season in the Centennial Conference, securing the fourth seed in the playoffs. The Bullets marched their way to the tournament finale, upsetting top seed and host Franklin & Marshall College in the process. On Jan. 26, Kirkpatrick earned his 250th career win with a 64-45 victory over Haverford College.
Since the inception of the Centennial Conference in 1993-94, only two coaches have claimed more regular season and league victories than Kirkpatrick. Under his guidance, 28 players have earned all-conference accolades, including 2005-06 CC Player of the Year and three-time first-team all-conference selection Jennifer Bengel.
A native of Johnstown, Pa., Kirkpatrick originally joined the Gettysburg coaching staff in 1986 as a part-time assistant with the men's basketball program. His coaching stops prior to Gettysburg included Bishop McCort High School in Johnstown- his high school alma mater - and Bermudian Springs High School in York Springs.
From 1990 to 2007, Kirkpatrick also served as the Bullets’ head softball coach, guiding the team to three CC Championships and three NCAA Division III Tournament appearances in 1994, 1999, and 2007. During his tenure as softball coach, the Bullets posted an impressive mark of 358-178-1.
Kirkpatrick is a 1976 graduate of the University of Pittsburgh-Johnstown with a degree in elementary education and later earned a master’s degree from Western Maryland College (now McDaniel).
