BULLETS USE BIG SECOND HALF TO DOWN HIRAM, 80-64, IN DAYS INN OPENER; GETTYSBURG TO FACE VA. WESLEYAN IN TITLE GAME

GETTYSBURG, PA. --- Bill Davidson scored a game-high 22 points and Curtis McNeil added a career-best 17 off the bench to lead Gettysburg over Hiram, 80-64, in the opening round of the Days Inn Tip-Off Tournament on Friday.

     The Bullets (1-0) will face Virginia Wesleyan in the tournament's championship game on Saturday afternoon.  Virginia Wesleyan downed Kenyon, 88-76, in the night's other first-round contest.  Game time is 4 p.m.  Kenyon and Hiram will battle in the consolation game at 2 p.m.

     Greg Schreiber added a team-best eight rebounds and a career-high nine assists for Gettysburg, which shot 17-for-25 (68.0 percent) from the floor in the second half while outscoring the Terriers, 45-27.

     Donald Burton led Hiram (0-1) with 19 points while Abraham Hutchinson added 10 points on 4-for-4 shooting from the field.

     Trailing 44-41 with 16:34 remaining in the second half following a Burton layup, Gettysburg went on a 15-0 run over the next seven minutes to take control of the game.

     Ryan Napp and Schreiber hit back-to-back layups to put the Bullets ahead for good at 45-44.  Davidson then connected on three straight three-pointers in a span of 1:57 to stretch the Gettysburg advantage to 54-44.

     McNeil's driving layup with 10:26 remaining made it 56-44 before the Terriers stopped the run with a basket from Hutchinson.

     The Bullets extended the lead to 66-52 on a bucket from Richie Pfeil with 7:33 left in the game.  Hiram then went on a 12-4 run to close to within 70-64 with 3:01 remaining following a pair of free throws by Burton.

     Napp, however, converted a pair of free throws to give the Bullets and 72-64 edge and McNeil put the game away with his third three-pointer of the game on the following possession.

     Terence Callahan added a career-high nine points for the Bullets while Napp also added nine points.

     In the night's first game, Virginia Wesleyan downed Kenyon 88-76 behind 22 points from Tim Petrillo and 19 from Ron Yuhasz.  Kenyon guard Nathan Aldinger led all scorers with 25 points while shooting 7-for-15 from behind the three-point line.
