CHESTERTOWN, MD. --- Greg Schreiber posted a team-high 19 points and eight rebounds to lead Gettysburg past Washington, 68-61, in Centennial Conference action on Satuday. With the win, the Bullets improved to 3-2 overall and 1-0 in conference play.
Bill Davidson (Lebanon, PA/Annville-Cleona) added 13 points and Richie Pfeil also reached double figures with 10 to help the Bullets snap a two-game losing streak and open their Centennial Conference schedule on a winning note.
Greg Adams led all scorers with 26 points for Washington, which fell to 1-4 overall and 0-1 in conference play. Steve DeVore chipped in with 11 points for the Shoremen.
Gettysburg took the lead for good when Pfeil drilled a three-pointer off a kick-out pass from Terence Callahan to make it 29-28 with 3:20 remaining in the first half. It was the eighth lead change of the first half.
The Bullets led by as many as nine points to get within 44-43, but Schreiber drilled a jumper and Davidson scored in a driving bank shot to push the Bullets lead to 48-43.
The Shoremen (1-4, 0-1 CC) pulled to within two points on eight different occasions over the next seven minutes, but couldn't tie or take the lead.
Trailing 64-61 in the game's final minutes, Washington had a chance to tie the game, but Alhamisi Simms' missed three-pointer was hauled in by Jim Natale with 47 seconds left.
The Bullets converted four of six free throws in the game's final minute to ice the victory.
Washington opened the game with a flurry, taking a 14-4 lead only four minutes in. Fueled by seven points from Schreiber, however, Gettysburg went on a 15-0 run over the next 5:40 to take a 19-14 lead midway through the half.
The lead changed hands five more times before Pfeils three-pointer late in the first half put the Bullets on top to stay.
Gettysburg returns to action on Wednesday, December 8 at home against Johns Hopkins University. Game time is 8 p.m.
