GETTYSBURG WOMEN OFF TO BEST START EVER AFTER 59-52 WIN AT WASHINGTON; DREVNA'S 18 POINTS FUEL WIN

CHESTERTOWN, MD. --- It wasn't easy, but in the end the Gettysburg women's basketball team showed why it's off to the best start in program history.

Steph Drevna (Lancaster, PA/Lancaster Catholic) scored a game-high 18 points and Mandy Wilson added all nine of her points in the second half to lead the Bullets past Washington, 59-52, in Centennial Conference action on Saturday.  With the win, Gettysburg improved to 6-0 for the first time in the 52-year history of the program and 3-0 in conference play.

Jamie Dawson added eight points in the win while Megan McDonald, Kelsey Williams and Carrie Kulp (New Holland, PA/Conestoga Valley) added seven points each.

Katie Bierzonski and Janine Morehead scored 13 points apiece to lead Washington, which fell to 1-4 (0-1 Centennial Conference).

Leading 30-29 at halftime, Gettysburg stormed out of the break with a 15-2 run that seemed to put the game out of reach.  Wilson fueled the surge with seven points while Drevna drilled a pair of buckets to stake the Bullets to a 45-31 lead with 12:45 remaining.

Undeterred, Washington answered with a 16-2 run of its own over the next 5:31 to tie the game at 47 with 7:14 left in regulation.

Following a Gettysburg timeout, however, the Bullets reeled off the game's next nine points to go on top for good.

Drevna started the run with a pull-up jumper from the left side of the lane.  Kulp and McDonald then converted two free throws each before Drevna capped the rally with her only three-pointer of the game to make it 56-47 with 4:39 left.

Washington's Daniela Rados drilled a jumper from the wing and Morehead converted a three-pointer play to pull the Shorewomen within 56-52.  Washington, however, would not score again in the game's final 3:54.

Dawson's layup and a McDonald free throw closed out the scoring.  The Shorewomen missed three-pointers on each of their final three possessions of the contest.

Drevna's 18 points were one shy of her career high of 19 set against Ursinus on December 5, 1998.

Gettysburg returns to action on Monday, December 6 at home against Messiah College.  Game time is 8 p.m.
