GETTYSBURG, PA. --- Joel Wertman scored a game-high 19 points and added 10 rebounds to lead No. 15 Johns Hopkins past Gettysburg, 65-61, in Centennial Conference action on Wednesday. With the loss, the Bullets fell to 3-3 overall and 1-1 in conference play.
Greg Schreiber (Mechanicsburg, PA/East Pennsboro) led Gettysburg in scoring for the second straight game, pouring in 18 points to go with four rebounds. Bill Davidson (Lebanon, PA/Annville-Cleona) added 12 points in the loss while Curtis McNeil also reached double figures with 10.
Nino Vanin added 12 points for the Blue Jays, which outrebounded Gettysburg 47-28 on the night en route to their fourth straight victory. Johns Hopkins (6-1, 2-0) shot 18-for-19 (94.7 percent) from the free-throw line for the game.
With Johns Hopkins trailing 59-57 and 3:04 left in regulation, Wertman converted a pair of free throws to knot the game at 59 before putting the Blue Jays ahead to stay with a put-back basket at the 2:00 mark.
A layup from Jon Olson, who collected six points and seven boards in the win, gave the Blue Jays a 63-59 edge with 1:03 left.
Schreiber answered by converting a pair of free throws to pull the Bullets within 63-61. Following a Johns Hopkins miss, Gettysburg had a final shot to tie the game or take the lead. McNeil's driving layup wouldn't fall, however, and Wertman corralled the rebound before icing the game with two more free throws.
Gettysburg trailed by as many as eight points in the early stages of the second half before rallying to take the lead.
Down 40-32 with 16:13 remaining, the Bullets went on a 12-4 run keyed by five points from McNeil to tie the game at 44.
Matthew Eisley responded for Johns Hopkins with four of his eight points during a 6-0 run that helped the Blue Jays push their lead back to 50-44 with 9:37 remaining.
Gettysburg pulled even at 57 when McNeil converted two free throws after a Davidson three-pointer with 5:44 left. Jim Natale gave the Bullets their final lead of the contest at 59-57 on a driving layup with 3:41 remaining.
Gettysburg returns to action on Saturday, December 11 at home against Elizabethtown College. Game time is 3 p.m.
