GETTYSBURG, PA --- Jeremy Shapiro (Leonia, NJ/Fieldston School) scored the game's only goal in the 87th minute to lift Gettysburg over Mary Washington, 1-0, in the 1999 season opener for both teams on Wednesday.
Jason Vishio (Reading, PA/Exeter) and Chris Pryor (Lawrenceville, PA/Lawrenceville School) picked up assists on the winning goal for the Bullets while Nick LaPorta (Chevy Chase, MD/Bethesda-Chevy Chase) made three saves to notch his first career victory and shutout at the collegiate level.
J.T. Nino made five stops in the net for Mary Washington (0-1).
Vishio started the winning play with a cross from the right side of the box that Pryor deflected onto the foot of Shapiro. The junior midfielder, who netted five goals including one gamewinner last season, one-timed a shot past Nino to give Gettysburg the win.
Shapiro led the Bullets with three shots on the afternoon while Vishio and Adam Outerbridge (Paget, Bermuda/Middlesex School-MA) added two apiece.
Gettysburg, currently ranked 18th in Division III, returns to action on Saturday, September 4 at Shippensburg University. Game time is 3 p.m.
