GETTYSBURG, Pa. --- Forget about Y2K. The Gettysburg College men's basketball team is now W1K (as in all-time win No. 1,000) compliant.
Bill Davidson (Lebanon, PA/Annville-Cleona) and Greg Schreiber (Mechanicsburg, PA/East Pennsboro) each posted double figures in points and rebounds to lead Gettysburg to the program's 1,000th all-time victory, a 72-59 decision over Alvernia in non-conference action on Monday.
Davidson recorded 24 points and tied a career-high with 12 rebounds. Schreiber added 18 points, 11 rebounds and a game-high six assists to help the Bullets (8-6) win for the fourth time in their last five games.
Only 38 NCAA Division III men's basketball program had recorded 1,000 all-time victories entering the 1999-2000 season. Gettysburg joins Franklin & Marshall (1,041 through January 15) and Muhlenberg (1,027) as the only other Centennial Conference program's to reach the milestone.
Curtis McNeil added 11 points for the Bullets – including a 3-for-4 performance from three-point range – while teammate Richie Pfeil dished out five assists and pulled down five rebounds.
Chris Alba shot 4-for-5 from three-point range to finish with a team-high 16 points for Alvernia (7-6). Keith Lambert added 15 points for the Crusaders while Gil Concepcion scored 12.
Trailing 23-15 with 5:23 left before halftime, Gettysburg closed out a half on a 15-2 run to take control of the game.
Antoine Gaither started the comeback with his lone basket of the game to the pull the Bullets within 23-17. With 3:51 left in the first half, Schreiber was fouled while teammate Mike Monroe drilled a three-pointer and capped the five-point possession with a pair of free throws to pull the Bullets within one at 23-22.
McNeil then dropped three-pointers on Gettysburg's next two possessions to give the home squad a 28-23 edge at the 1:00 mark.
Lambert stopped the run on a tip-in basket for Alvernia before Schreiber made a layup to give the Bullets a 30-25 lead heading into the locker room.
Deotis Carolina cut the Gettysburg lead to three with the Crusaders' first basket of the second half, but Alvernia would get no closer the rest of the way.
Four points from Schreiber keyed an 8-2 burst that stretched the Gettysburg advantage to 38-29 with 16:11 remaining. Davidson then scored the Bullets' next nine points to help his team build its largest lead of the game at 53-38 with 11:01 left.
A 12-2 Alvernia run over the next 4:17 pulled the Crusaders within 55-50, but Davidson and Ryan Napp knocked down three-pointers to seal the milestone victory.
Gettysburg held a 44-30 rebounding edge on the evening while holding Alvernia to 23-for-64 (35.9 percent) shooting from the field. Crusader leading scorer Chad Kratzer (15.1 ppg) was held to no points on the night, although he did haul in a team-best nine rebounds.
