WESTMINSTER, Md. --- Making his first collegiate start, freshman Greg Hill set a school record with eight three-pointers and finished with 27 points to lead Western Maryland past Gettysburg 72-68 in Centennial Conference (CC) action on Wednesday.
The win broke a 10-game conference losing streak for the Green Terror (3-11, 1-4 CC) dating back to January 23, 1999.
Gettysburg's Greg Schreiber (Mechanicsburg, PA/East Pennsboro) scored a career-high 24 points for the Bullets, who fell to 8-7 (2-3 CC) while losing for only the second time in their last six games. Ryan Napp added 13 points for Gettysburg while Bill Davidson (Lebanon, PA/Annville-Cleona) added 12.
Hill finished the day 9-for-11 from the field and a perfect 8-for-8 from three-point range. Jim Hegmann also reached double figures for Western Maryland with 10 points.
The Bullets took their biggest lead of the game with eight seconds remaining when Schreiber nailed a three-pointer to make it 38-32.
Hill, however, tossed in a 45-foot three-pointer as the buzzer sounded to pull the Green Terror within three at halftime.
Hill stayed hot after the break, tying the game at 38 with his fourth three-pointer of the night only 10 seconds into the half.
Schreiber then converted a three-point play to give Gettysburg its last lead of the night at 41-38 with 18:56 remaining before Hill drained another three to knot the game at 41.
Western Maryland went ahead for good at 49-47 with a basket by Hegmann at the 15:50 mark. That bucket sparked a 7-0 Green Terror run that Hill capped with three-pointer No. 7 to make it 54-47 with 14:01 left.
The Green Terror stretched their edge to 62-53 with less than eight minutes to play before the Bullets rallied.
Napp drilled one of his three three-pointers to key a 7-0 run that pulled Gettysburg within two.
Hill's eighth and final trey made it 65-60 Western Maryland at the 5:16 mark. After Schreiber surpassed his career high with a pair of free throws, Michael Paesani nailed his only three-pointer of the game with 2:38 left to put the Green Terror up by six.
Western Maryland held a 70-68 lead with 36 seconds left when Brian Billman missed the front end of a one-and-one free throw. The Bullets couldn't corral the loose rebound, however, and Paesani ended the game by converting a pair of free throws with 27 seconds left.
Gettysburg shot 24-for-48 (50.0 percent) from the floor on the night while Western Maryland went 29-for-56 (51.8 percent), including 11-for-20 from three-point range.
The Bullets return to action on Saturday, January 22 at Frostburg St. University. Game time is 8 p.m.
