Shapiro nets game-winner as Gettysburg blanks Haverford, 2-0

GETTYSBURG, Pa. - Jeremy Shapiro (Leonia, NJ/Fieldston School) scored his fourth game-winner of the season to help Gettysburg beat Haverford 2-0 in a battle of regionally-ranked, Centennial Conference (CC) teams.

Gettysburg (8-3, 3-1 CC) pushed into Haverford (7-3, 2-2 CC) territory early and announced its presence with a post-ringing headball from Andrew Addonizio (Cutchogue, NY/Mattituck), and a followup headball from Michael McLaughlin (Swampscott, MA/Northfield Mt. Hermon) that stretched the saving ability of Ford goal keeper Campbell Palfrey.

Using the momentum, the Bullets again looked to McLaughlin to pick off a Haverford pass at midfield and thread it to Shapiro, who in turn sped to the corner of the six-yard box and cut it past Palfrey.  Palfrey recorded three saves between the Ford posts.

The remainder of the first half, and 36 minutes of the second half would pass without incident, but four seconds into the 82nd minute the Bullets struck again. Malcolm Thomas (Conway, NH/North YarmouthAcademy) received a breakaway pass from Cameron MacLean (Riverside, CT/Greenwich, Folsom) and slotted the ball to the far netting for his first collegiate goal.  MacLean recorded his first collegiate assist on the play.

Bullet goalie Nick LaPorta (Chevy Chase, MD/Bethesda-Chevy Chase) tallied three saves on the day.

The Bullets and the Fords both recorded 11 shots, while Gettysburg saw an 8-3 advantage in corner kicks.

Gettysburg returns to action on Friday, October 6 at home against Shippensburg University.  Game time is 4 p.m.
