GETTYSBURG, Pa. -- Linda Schuster scored a pair of goals to lead No. 4 College of New Jersey (TCNJ) over Gettysburg 4-0 in non-conference women's soccer action on Saturday. The loss broke a seven-game Bullet unbeaten streak.
Denise Buckley and Christine Grande both tallied a goal and an assist, while Dana Vetrone and Alison Baker each recorded an assist. Goalie Victoria Nusse posted three saves on the day on four Gettysburg shots.
Lauren Melillo (Lewisburg, PA/Lewisburg) led the Bullets (7-3-1) with two shots, while Julia Girman (Cherry Hill, NJ/Cherry Hill East) and Kay McLaughlin (Floral Park, NY/St. Mary's) both recorded a shot. Goalie Carine Doyle (Exton, PA/Bishop Shanahan) posted five saves on 22 TCNJ shots.
After 20 minutes of even soccer, Vetrone clanged a shot off the post and Buckley enthusiastically pounded the rebound back into the net to give the visitors the 1-0 lead. Five minutes later Buckley unloaded a shot that Doyle stopped but couldn't control and Schuster netted the rebound for a 2-0 Lion advantage.
Gettysburg shored up the defense and used the end of the half to rattle off all four of its shots, including one from Melillo that just sailed wide of the post.
The College of New Jersey opened the second half with added vigor and buried two apparent goals in the first 10 minutes, only to have them taken off the board due to offsides. Despite the setback, the Lions soon found the net again, getting another goal from Schuster in the 77th minute and a late score from Grande in the 84th minute.
The Lions outshot Gettysburg 22-4 and held an 11-2 advantage in corner kicks.
The Bullets return to action on Wednesday, October 11 at home against Centennial Conference foe Johns Hopkins. Game time is 4 p.m.
