Navy uses big second half to subdue upset-minded Gettysburg, 81-62

Box Score

ANNAPOLIS, Md. – Kyle Barker scored 18 of his game-high 23 points in the second half to help Division I Navy erase a 33-30 halftime deficit and subdue upset-minded Gettysburg 81-62 in non-conference men's basketball action on Tuesday.

Barker knocked down five 3-pointers on the night, scoring five points during a 14-0 second-half run that helped the Midshipmen (5-4) go ahead to stay and break a two-game losing streak.

Junior Curtis McNeil (Alexandria, VA/St. Stephen's & St. Agnes) scored a team-high 19 points for Gettysburg, which led by as many as 11 points in the first half and held a 43-42 advantage with 12:32 to play before Navy's comeback.  Terence Callahan (Bay Shore, NY/St. Anthony's) added 12 points in the loss, the Bullets' eighth straight to the Midshipmen dating back to 1992.

Freshman Dami Oloruntoba (Glenn Dale, MD/Eleanor Roosevelt) gave Gettysburg its last lead of the night at 43-42 with his first collegiate basket on a layup with 12:32 remaining.

Navy went back on top for good at 44-43 on two free throws from Patriot League Preseason Player of the Year Chris Williams, who finished the night with 15 points.

Barker converted a pair of free throws and Demond Sheperd scored off a steal before Barker knocked down at 3-pointer at the 11:08 mark to give the Midshipmen a 51-43 lead.

Jehiel Lewis followed a steal with a layup for a 10-point lead and Jason Jeanpierre capped the run with a 3-pointer from the left side to make it 56-43 with 10:14 left.

Callahan converted two free throws to stop the run, but Navy reeled off an 11-5 streak over the next 4:19 to put the game away.

Despite being outrebounded 42-24 on the night by the taller Midshipmen, Gettysburg jumped out to an early double-digit lead and held that advantage throughout the first half.

McNeil scored five points and Mike Monroe (Alexandria, VA/Bishop Ireton) added all four of his points on the night as the Bullets stormed out to a 15-4 lead in the game's first 7:16.

Navy pulled to within 20-17 on two free throws from Reggie Skipworth at 8:16, but Gettysburg used a 9-3 run capped by four points from Jim Natale (Washington Crossing, PA/Council Rock) to open a 29-20 lead with 3:06 in the half.

Down 33-30 at halftime, Navy scored the first eight points of the second half to take a 38-33 advantage.  Gettysburg fought back for a 39-38 edge behind a layup from Callahan and two straight buckets from McNeil.

In addition to Oloruntoba, Bullet freshman Chris Foley (Mendham, NJ/Mendham) scored his first collegiate points on a driving layup with 5:51 to play.

Natale finished with eight points on the night for Gettysburg while Antoine Gaither (Laurel, MD/Laurel) tied a career high with seven points, all in the first half.

Gettysburg returns to action on Friday, January 5, 2001 at the Wilkes University Tournament.  Game time and opponent is to be announced.
