GETTYSBURG, Pa. – Greg Schreiber (Mechanicsburg, PA/East Pennsboro) scored a career-high 29 points and tied a career best with 15 rebounds to lead Gettysburg past Washington (Md.) 80-72 in Centennial Conference (CC) men's basketball action on Saturday.
Schreiber scored 11 of his points during a 28-2 run across both halves that helped the Bullets (3-3, 1-0 CC) turn a 29-24 first-half deficit into a 21-point second-half lead en route to the win in their conference opener.
Curtis McNeil (Alexandria, VA/St. Stephen's & St. Agnes) added 20 points thanks to a 12-for-14 showing from the free-throw line, while Cody Bowers (Indiana, PA/Indiana) knocked down three 3-pointers on the way to a career-high 15 points for Gettysburg.
Conference leading scorer Greg Adams poured in a team-high 26 points for Washington (2-3, 0-1 CC), which dropped its second straight CC opener to the Bullets. Alhamisi Simms and Don Brandenberg each added 11 points for the Shoremen, who shot just 26-for-70 (37.1 percent) from the field on the afternoon.
Washington led by as many as 11 points in the first half and held a 29-24 lead with 48 seconds left before the Bullets took control of the game.
Bowers knocked down a 3-pointer and Terence Callahan (Bay Shore, NY/St. Anthony's) scored on a layup with two seconds left to tie the game at 29 heading into halftime.
Schreiber put back a McNeil miss to give Gettysburg the lead for good at 31-29 with 50 seconds gone in the second half. After McNeil converted two free throws, Washington's Ryan Plews scored his only two points of the game and the Shoremen's only points for the next 6 minutes and 1 second.
Schreiber started the 19-0 Bullet run with seven straight points on two layups and three free throws to make it 40-31 with 15:47 left. Bowers tallied the next six points on the run with three free throws and a trey for a 46-31 lead at the 14:06 mark.
McNeil and Schreiber each added a pair of free throws before Jim Natale (Washington Crossing, PA/Council Rock) capped the run with a layup that made it 52-31 Bullets with 12:30 remaining.
Adams scored on a layup at 12:18 to break the run and scored nine points over the next 8:04 to pull the Shoremen within five at 68-63 with 4:08 to play.
Gettysburg, however, answered with a 7-2 run, keyed by five free throws from McNeil, to restore its double-digit lead at 75-65 with 1:02 left. Washington would get no closer than four points in the final minute.
Both teams were cold from the floor to open the game, combining for only 22 points in the first 11 minutes of the half. With the scored tied at 10, Washington went on a 13-2 run keyed by 3-pointers from Adams and Earl Piner, who finished with seven points and 11 rebounds, to take a 23-12 lead with 5:34 left before halftime.
In addition to his milestone point and rebound totals, Schreiber also dished out a team-high four assists and went 10-for-11 from the free throw line, helping the Bullets go 29-for-36 from the charity stripe as a team. Natale added five points and also dished out four assists in the win.
Gettysburg returns to action on Wednesday, December 6 at Johns Hopkins University. Game time is 8 p.m.
