Van Nostrand scores career-high 19 to lead Bullets past Washington, 69-52

GETTYSBURG, Pa. – Freshman guard Keriann Van Nostrand (Bridgewater, NJ/Bridgewater-Raritan Reg.) poured in a career-high 19 points to lead all scorers as Gettysburg defeated Washington 69-52 in Centennial Conference (CC) women's basketball action on Saturday.

Three other Bullets scored in double digits, including Steph Drevna (Lancaster, PA/Lancaster Catholic) with 14 points and Katie Hewes (West Chester, PA/Villa Maria Academy), who tallied a career-high 12 points.  Gettysburg forward Jay Hodge (Silver Spring, MD/St. Vincent Pallotti) posted 10 points and nine rebounds, one board shy of her third double-double of the season.

Karen Simos led Washington (2-3, 0-1) with 15 points while Katie Bierzonski posted 10 points and a team-high 15 rebounds.

 Drevna opened the game with a layup, but Washington's Kerry Lomax answered with a layup of her own and Bierzonski drilled a 3-pointer to give the Shorewomen their only lead of the game at 5-2.

Drevna responded with her lone 3-pointer of the game to tie it at 5-5 and Gettysburg took the lead for good on a free throw by Hodge with 16:22 remaining in the half.

The Bullets (4-1, 3-0 CC) then went on a 9-0 run and held the Shorewomen scoreless for 7 minutes and 29 seconds in the first half to take a 17-7 lead with 6:20 left in the half.  Washington cut the deficit to two points, but trailed 29-23 at halftime following a Hodge layup and two free throws from Jen Nolan (Germantown, MD/Seneca Valley).

 Keyed by six points from Hewes, the Bullets used a 13-5 run in the second half to take a 42-30 lead with 11:35 remaining en route to their third consecutive conference win.  Gettysburg led by as many as 19 points in the second half and shot 14-for-26 (53.8 percent) from the floor after halftime.

 In addition to her 14 points, Drevna added a game-high seven assists, giving her 15 assists in her last two games.  Van Nostand also added seven rebounds on the night, one shy of her career high.

 Gettysburg returns to action on Wednesday, December 6 at home against Johns Hopkins University.  Game time is 7 p.m.
