GETTYSBURG, Pa. – Molly Malloy posted team highs with 16 points and 12 rebounds to lead Johns Hopkins past Gettysburg 82-67 in Centennial Conference (CC) women's basketball action on Wednesday.
Lauren Martin added 13 points and Maureen Myers also reached double figures with 10 to help the Blue Jays (5-1, 2-0 CC) win their fourth straight and hand the Bullets (4-2, 3-1 CC) their first conference loss of the 2000-01 season.
The loss overshadowed a big night by Gettysburg freshman Dana Bear (Lansdale, PA/Lansdale Catholic), who scored a career-high 29 points that included four 3-pointers and a 9-for-11 performance from the free-throw line. Steph Drevna (Lancaster, PA/Lancaster Catholic) chipped in with 14 points in the loss while Katie Hewes (West Chester, PA/Villa Maria Academy) led Gettysburg on the glass with eight rebounds.
Johns Hopkins never trailed on the evening, taking the lead for good at 8-6 on a layup from Folorunsho Edobar-Osula with 13:35 left in the first half.
A free throw by Hewes pulled the Bullets within 14-12 at the 10:11 mark, but a 15-3 Johns Hopkins run over the next 6 minutes, 11 seconds pushed the Blue Jay lead into double digits.
Jennifer Dearborn opened the run with two of her seven points and Jennifer Butterwei converted a put-back to make it 18-12 Blue Jays with 8:53 left in the half.
Jay Hodge (Silver Spring, MD/St. Vincent Pallotti) made a free throw to cut the lead to five, but Gettysburg native Heidi Sumser (Gettysburg, PA/Gettysburg) struck for five straight points on a 3-pointer and two free throws, and Myers made a jumper for a 25-13 Johns Hopkins lead at 6:16.
After Bear made two free throws, Malloy scored off a steal, then blocked a shot to set up a basket by Edobar-Osula that capped the run.
Gettysburg pulled within 29-19 on buckets from Keriann Van Nostrand (Bridgewater, NJ/Bridgewater-Raritan Reg.) and Hewes, but Johns Hopkins built a 39-24 lead at halftime and led by as many as 27 in the second half en route to the win, the Jays' 11th in their last 12 meetings with Gettysburg.
Bear tossed in 20 of her 29 points and three of her four 3-pointers after halftime, finishing the night as the team's scoring leader at 16.8 points per game.
Johns Hopkins held a 51-41 edge in rebounds for the night andheld Gettysburg to a 20-for-67 (29.9 percent) performance from the floor.
Gettysburg returns to action on Friday, December 8 at St. Mary's (Md.) College. Game time is 7 p.m.
