GETTYSBURG MEN USE SECOND-HALF RALLY TO DOWN WESTERN MARYLAND, 70-62; BULLET KNOCKED OUT OF CC PLAYOFF RACE

GETTYSBURG, Pa. --- Curtis McNeil led four players in double figures with 15 points to help Gettysburg defeat Western Maryland 70-62 in Centennial Conference (CC) action on Saturday.

Greg Schreiber (Mechanicsburg, PA/East Pennsboro) added 14 points while Ryan Napp (11 points) and Bill Davidson (Lebanon, PA/Annville-Cleona) (10 points) also scored in double figures for the Bullets (13-9, 6-5 CC).  Despite the win, Gettysburg was eliminated from the CC playoff race following wins by West division leaders Franklin & Marshall and Johns Hopkins on Saturday.

Mike Furey led all players with 17 points on 8-for-8 shooting for Western Maryland (3-18, 1-10 CC), which lost for the 12th time in its last 13 games.  The lone win in that stretch was a 72-68 decision over Gettysburg on January 19 in Westminster.

The Green Terror took their biggest lead of the game at 53-48 with 9:30 remaining when Jeff Myers scored on a driving layup.

Gettysburg answered with an 8-0 run to take the lead for good at the 7:11 mark.  McNeil and Schreiber scored layups to pull the Bullets within one point at 53-52.  Terence Callahan gave Gettysburg the lead on a putback and scored off a steal on the next possession to make it 56-53 with 6:58 to play.

Western Maryland hung in the game down the stretch before Jim Hegmann knocked down a hook shot to pull the Green Terror within 64-62 with 1:59 left.

Gettysburg maintained its two-point lead by holding Western Maryland scoreless on its next three possessions. Schreiber then converted three out of four free throws in the game's final minute to help the Bullets seal the victory.

Keyed by 3-pointers from Davidson and McNeil, Gettysburg opened the game on a 10-0 run and pushed the lead to 15-4 on another McNeil triple with 14:19 left in the first half.

Behind nine points from Furey and six points from Karl Friedheim, Western Maryland chipped away through the first half and took a 33-31 lead into the locker room.

With his 10-point performance, Davidson needs 20 points over the next two games to become the 17th player in Gettysburg history to score 1,000 career points.  The senior co-captain also led the Bullets with nine rebounds on Saturday.

Brian Billman added nine points and a team-high eight rebounds for Western Maryland.

Gettysburg returns to action on Wednesday, February 16 at Ursinus College.  Game time is 8 p.m.
