GETTYSBURG, Pa. --- Bill Davidson (Lebanon, PA/Annville-Cleona) scored a game-high 23 points – including the 1000th point of his collegiate career – and Ryan Napp added 22 to lead Gettysburg past Ursinus 79-73 in Centennial Conference (CC) action on Wednesday.
Davidson became the 17th player in Gettysburg history to reach the 1,000-point mark when he scored on a driving layup with 6:38 remaining in the game. Curtis McNeil added 15 points for the Bullets (14-9, 7-5 CC), who won for the seventh straight time at home in Bream Gymnasium.
Alan Karafin led three players in double figures with 14 points Ursinus (16-7, 8-4 CC), which erased a 20-point deficit and took a 69-68 lead with 3:56 remaining before Gettysburg closed the game on an 11-4 run to seal the win. CC leading scorer Richie Barrett added 12 points and nine rebounds while Dan Luciano chipped in with nine points and a game-high 13 boards as the Bears lost for the first time in their last five games.
After trailing for most of the game, Ursinus took its first and only lead of the night when Stephen Erfle converted a layup off a Barrett pass to put the Bears up 69-68 with 3:56 left.
Two free throws from McNeil put the Bullets back on top for good at 70-69 with 2:48 to go and Greg Schreiber (Mechanicsburg, PA/East Pennsboro) knocked down both ends of a 1-and-1 to give the home team a 72-69 edge.
Following an empty Ursinus possession, Mike Monroe drilled an 18-footer to put the Bullets ahead 74-69 with 56 seconds remaining. Luther Owens, who finished the night with 10 points and three assists, pulled Ursinus within 74-71 on a driving layup, but a McNeil free-throw made it a four-point game and the Bears would get no closer in the game's final seconds.
Gettysburg opened the game on a roll, shooting 65.2 percent (15-for-23) from the floor in the first half and building a 36-16 lead before taking a 41-31 advantage into the locker room. Davidson scored 12 of his 23 points in the opening half to set the stage for his milestone basket.
Davidson scored his 999th career point by finishing a 3-point play with 13:13 left to give Gettysburg a 56-39 lead. The Bears answered with a 30-12 run over the next 9 minutes and 17 seconds to take their only lead of the contest.
In the midst of that run, Davidson scored his 1,000th point on a driving layup with 6:38 left, prompting a standing ovation from the home crowd.
Davidson's 23-point performance was his tenth 20-plus point scoring game of the season. McNeil added a career-high five assists to go with his 15 points.
Ursinus held a 38-27 edge in rebounding for the night and also shot 20-for-22 (90.9 percent) from the free throw line.
