PAYNE SCORES CAREER-HIGH 14 AS GETTYSBURG SINKS HOOD 83-26; BULLETS TO HOST JUNIATA IN INVITATIONAL TITLE GAME

GETTYSBURG, Pa. --- Sarah Payne (Dallastown, PA/Dallastown) scored a career-high 14 points and Jen Nolan set a career high with eight assists to lead Gettysburg past Hood 83-26 in the first round of the 5th Annual Gettysburg Invitational on Friday.

     The Bullets (12-6), who held the Blazers to 21.4 percent (9-for-42) shooting from the floor on the night, will face Juniata in Saturday's championship game at 3 p.m in Bream Gym.  The Eagles knocked off Notre Dame (Md.) 83-42 in the night's other first-round matchup.

     Jay Hodge scored nine points and hauled in a team-best 11 rebounds for Gettysburg while Katie Havens also scored a season-high nine points.  The Bullets shot 53.1 percent (34-for-64) from the field on the game, including 18-for-32 in the first half while running out to a 41-10 lead.

     Payne, whose previous career-best was nine points in last season's tournament opener against Hood, went 5-for-6 from the field including a perfect 4-for-4 from three-point range.

     Jenni Ferris scored 10 points and added nine rebounds for Hood (3-13) while Mandy South also scored 10 points.  The Blazers will face conference rival Notre Dame (Md.) in Saturday's consolation game at 1 p.m.

     Gettysburg opened the game with an 11-0 run before Ferris put Hood on the board with a jumper at the 14:10 mark.

     The Blazers pulled within 15-7, but Gettysburg answered with a 16-0 run for a 31-7 lead with five minutes left before halftime.  Cory Dallas (Mechanicsburg, PA/Cumberland Valley) scored three of her career-high six points during the decisive stretch before Nolan and Havens capped it with back-to-back breakaway layups.  Megan McDonald scored all eight of her points in the game's first 15 minutes before resting with the other Gettysburg starters for the second half.

     Ferris broke the Hood drought with the first of her two three-pointers, but Hodge scored five points in a 10-0 Gettysburg run to close out the half with the Bullets on top 41-10.

     Gettysburg is seeking their third championship in the Invitational's five years.  The Bullets also captured tournament titles in 1996 and 1998.
