LEXINGTON, Va. --- Ric Bremer (Ridgefield, CT/John Jay [NY]) scored the game-winning goal with 13:56 remaining as No. 4 Gettysburg edged second-ranked Washington & Lee in a defensive battle of Top 5 teams on Sunday.
Tommy Pearce (Chestertown, MD/Woodberry Forest School [VA]) added two goals, including the clincher with 46 seconds left, to help the Bullets (2-0) break a four-game losing streak to the Generals, including a 6-4 loss last season.
Bremer and Ross Garretson (New Hope, PA/Germantown Acdmy.) each tallied a goal and an assist for Gettysburg while goalie Andrew Barter (North Brookfield, MA/Tabor Acdmy.) made 11 saves in the winning effort. Mark Pollak (Fairfax Station, VA/Lake Braddock) and Wes Cadman (Yorktown Heights, NY/Yorktown) also found the net for the Bullets.
Mark Dugan scored two goals with a game-high 11 shots for Washington & Lee while teammates Chris Brown and Andrew Barnett also found the cage. Goalie Wes Hays made 12 saves for the Generals.
After the teams battled to a 3-3 tie in the first half, Gettysburg took the lead when Garretson fired a ground-ball shot past Hays with 9:55 left in the quarter.
Washington & Lee answered in the final seconds of the third period to knot the game for the fourth time on the afternoon. Following a Bullet turnover after nearly three minutes of possession time, Brown scored off a feed from David Skeen as time expired to make it 4-4 heading into the final 15 minutes.
It took the Bullets only 1:04 to regain their edge, this time for good. Defender Adam Aiello (South Setauket, NY/Ward Melville) broke into the Generals' defensive zone before dishing off to Bremer, who beat Hays to make it 5-4.
Both teams went back-and-forth in a defensive final quarter, but neither could score until Pearce found the empty net with 46 seconds left to seal the win for Gettysburg.
Barnett opened the scoring for Washington & Lee with a goal from Colin Dougherty at 8:50 of the first quarter. Pollak answered with a goal one minute and 12 seconds later to tie the game at one and Cadman made it 2-1 with a goal at the 1:07 mark of the first quarter.
Dugan sandwiched both of his goals around an extra-man tally by Pearce to send the game into the intermission tied at 3-3.
Gettysburg outshot the Generals 28-23 on the afternoon and also held W&L scoreless in four extra-man opportunities.
The Bullets, who are currently ranked fourth in Division III, open their home season on Wednesday, March 15 at home against Widener University. Game time is 3:30 p.m.
