GETTYSBURG SOFTBALL OPENS SEASON WITH PAIR OF SHUTOUT WINS

MYRTLE BEACH, S.C. --- Courtney Todd, Melissa Hazzard and Sarah Stokes combined to pitch 12 scoreless innings, helping the Gettysburg softball team open its 2000 season with a pair of shutout victories on Monday at the Snowbird Tournament.  The Bullets blanked Rutgers-Camden 11-0 in five innings before defeating Beaver 3-0 in the day's second game.

Todd struck out six and allowed only three hits in four innings against Rutgers-Camden to pick up her first win of the season.  Stokes also allowed only three hits over four innings while fanning six in the win over Beaver.  Hazzard closed out both games with a combined four scoreless innings of relief.

Megan Wargo (New Freedom, PA/Susquehannock) went 4-for-6 on the day with two runs scored and five RBI to lead the Gettysburg offense.  Mandy Wilson collected two hits, two RBI and three runs in the win over Rutgers-Camden while Emily Boardman also chipped in with a pair of hits.  Steph Mastropaolo went 2-for-3 with a two-run double to lead the way in the nightcap.

Against Rutgers-Camden, the Bullets struck for two runs in the first inning on a Wargo two-RBI single before erupting for nine more in the third to take a commanding lead.  Wargo, Wilson and Casey Stevens each delivered two-run singles during the rally, which saw Gettysburg send 13 batters to the plate.

Against Beaver, the Bullets scored the only two runs they would need in the second inning.  With two outs and Wargo on first base, Whitney Walsh drew a walk and Mastropaolo followed with a double for the first two RBI of her collegiate career to make it 2-0.  Gettysburg added an insurance run in the fifth when Kelsey Williams doubled and scored on a two-out single from Wargo.

The Bullets return to action on Tuesday, March 14 with a doubleheader against Delta (Mich.) Junior College.  The first game begins at 10 a.m.
